If you’ve spent any time in the Troopy scene, chances are you already know Sandy Tracks. He’s the bloke out there doing what most of us dream of—travelling full-time in his 78 Series Land Cruiser, chasing epic views, living off-grid, and filming it all as he goes.
So when he rolled into Elevate Automotive for a complete custom 78 Series Land Cruiser fit-out, we were keen to get involved. Gavin needed a build that could handle remote touring, off-grid living, and working from the road—with all the gear powered, accessible, and built to last. No fuss, just function.
The back of the rig is where a lot of the action happens. We’ve fitted a Victron screen on a RAM mount so it can swivel and be controlled from inside or outside the rear doors. Super handy for checking your off-grid power setup on the go.
There’s a heap of 240V outlets going in too—one at the rear of the cabinets (driver’s side), a pair up on the desk workspace (raised high enough to fit chunky laptop chargers), and another to power the coffee machine and keg drawer. We’re working closely with Odyssey Fabrication on this part to get the layout right, especially as this one’s getting a thicker resin benchtop than the usual Odyssey spec.
Cooling is covered with both a Bushman upright fridge and a 15V Bushman drawer fridge—because if you’re living full-time on the road, cold beers and fresh food are non-negotiables.
We’ve also set up White/Red strip lighting under all the gull wings, on the drop-down rear table (tucked into the recess), and even mounted on the rear Molle panels to light up the area at night. We’re keeping the lighting options flexible.
One of the big additions is the Brushless ARB twin compressor, mounted in the rear driver’s side quarter panel with an outlet at the utility hatch and an external switch so Gavin can air up quickly without crawling into the back.
An EcoX sound bar has also been hardwired in on the Molle panel—because good music makes good trips even better.
Gavin's got loads of camera gear, so we’ve installed 6 USB ports at the rear bench, more near the dash to power Quad Lock photo mounts, and made sure his Cruiser Console USBs are powered up. We’ve gone with black switch panels and fittings throughout for a clean, modern finish.
The Victron setup is also wired into tank senders, giving full visibility over water use. Both tanks are plumbed and powered—one for drinking water, one for showering and general use. There’s even a hot water system hardwired and connected up, plus discharge points at the utility hatch. We’ve tucked the breathers near the fuel caps to keep the hatch clean and free for other gear.
We’ve also pre-run all the roof wiring so that when the roof rack, solar panels, and work lights are installed, it’s just plug and play. Each side’s light bar and the rear will have separate switches, giving full control depending on where Gavin is set up.
It’s a solid off-grid setup built for remote touring, and everything’s been done with flexibility, future upgrades, and ease of use in mind. The UHF radio is going in soon, and we’ve left the whip location open for now—easy enough to sort once Sandy decides what works best.
This isn’t just a Troopy with a few mods—it’s a custom overland build designed to work hard, look clean, and let you live and work anywhere in Australia.
There’s still more to come, and we’ll be chatting with Gavin, the head tech behind the install, in an upcoming video to run through all the details. So if you're keen to see how this all works together in real life, keep your eyes peeled.
And if you’re dreaming about building a rig like this—whether it’s a fully off-grid setup, interior fit-out, or custom touring upgrades—get in touch with us at Elevate Automotive.
We’d love to help you bring your adventure vehicle to life.
