Electric side steps sit tucked under the sill with the door closed and drop down the moment the door opens — kids, older passengers and short crews all get a proper stepping surface instead of a scramble. Fixed steps and rock rails stay in place and take a hit from a rock or a stump without deforming the sill. Choose electric for daily-driver comfort, fixed for hard remote touring, and both if the build budget allows.

Electric steps draw from the vehicle's 12V accessory circuit and cycle every time a door opens — the wiring loom and door-switch tap has to be neat, fused, and CANbus-friendly on newer vehicles. Fixed rock rails need to be rated for the passenger weight they will actually see plus the recovery load if you jack off them. We check both at fitment.
