MPPT VS PWM

A PWM regulator drops your panel's voltage to match the battery, losing every extra watt as heat. An MPPT converts the difference — a 50V panel into a 14V battery is a 30-40% real energy gain over PWM, especially in cold, low-light or partial-shade conditions. On anything above 100W of solar or a lithium bank, MPPT pays for itself in a season.

SIZING YOUR MPPT

MPPT ratings are voltage-in / amps-out. Victron 100/30 handles up to 100V of panel input at 30A output — enough for around 400W of 12V solar. 150/35, 150/60, 250/60 step up for bigger panel arrays and 24V/48V systems. Add your panels' Voc together (in series) or take the highest (in parallel) and pick an MPPT rated at least 20% above that.

VICTRON SMARTSOLAR AND AMPTRON

Victron SmartSolar is our default — built-in Bluetooth, full VictronConnect monitoring, integrates with a Cerbo GX and other Victron kit. BlueSolar is the same hardware without Bluetooth for shed installs where phone monitoring isn't needed. Victron EasySolar bundles inverter, charger and MPPT in one unit for compact off-grid builds. Amptron's 20A and 40A inline MPPTs are the value pick.

LITHIUM PROFILE MATTERS

Every MPPT on this page can be configured for LiFePO4 lithium — but it has to actually be configured. Leave it on the factory lead-acid profile and your lithium bank will either sit undercharged or the BMS will disconnect it. We set the lithium profile on every MPPT we install; if you're fitting your own, use VictronConnect or Amptron's app to switch it before you connect the battery.

MPPT wins on nearly every touring build — it harvests 20–30% more from the same panel, especially in overcast or cool conditions. PWM only makes sense on very small panels where the price gap outweighs the yield.
Match panel wattage to controller amps at your battery voltage. A 200W 12V setup needs about 15A on the output side, so a Victron 100/20 is comfortable. Add 25% headroom for cold-weather voltage spikes.
