The Amptron BluEdge 12V 400Ah is built for systems that actually draw hard rather than just store a lot. It carries 400Ah at 12.8V, which is 5120Wh, and will deliver 300A continuously with a 600A peak for three seconds. That is enough to run a large inverter without the battery being the limiting factor.

The certifications are the part worth paying attention to. It is certified to IEC62619 and UN38.3, and compliant with AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 for recreational vehicles and AS/NZS 3004.2:2014 for marine. If you are fitting a battery into a caravan or a boat in Australia, that compliance is not a nice-to-have, it is what makes the installation signable.

Inside are prismatic cells with reinforced busbars and a rigid frame, which is what allows it to be mounted on its side without losing usable capacity or shaking components loose. Amptron rate it for 100 percent depth of discharge and recommend 80 percent for longest life, which still leaves 320Ah you can use against roughly half of a comparable lead acid bank. Rated life is 6000 cycles at a 0.2C standard charge and discharge.

The integrated BMS handles protection and monitoring and talks over Bluetooth, RS485 and CANbus, so it will sit in a monitored system properly rather than being a black box. Charging is 80A standard and up to 300A maximum, so it will take everything a large charger or alternator setup can give it. Amptron support up to four in series, so two makes a 24V bank and four makes 48V, and they can be paralleled for more capacity at 12V.

Two things to plan for before it arrives. It weighs 40.5kg, so the mount and the lifting need thinking about rather than improvising. And the M8 terminals torque to 6Nm — worth using a torque wrench, because over-tightening lithium terminals is one of the more common ways these get damaged on install.

  • Can be mounted in any orientation including on its side, without losing usable capacity or working components loose.
  • Torque the M8 terminals to 6Nm. Use a torque wrench - over-tightening lithium terminals is one of the more common ways these are damaged during installation.
  • It weighs 40.5kg. Plan the mount and the lift rather than improvising on the day.
  • Size the cable for the current you intend to draw. At 300A continuous this is a battery that will happily supply more than most cable runs are built for.
  • Keep all connections clean and secure, and do not short the terminals.
  • Charge between 0 and 55 degrees C. The BMS will protect the battery but charging below freezing is what damages lithium cells.
  • For RV and marine installations, this battery carries the AS/NZS compliance the wiring rules require.

Q: Can I wire these in series for a 24V or 48V system?
A: Yes. Amptron support up to 4 of these in series, so two gives you a 24V bank and four gives you 48V. They can also be paralleled for more capacity at 12V. The one caveat is that parallel communication is not supported, so the BMS units will not talk to each other when paralleled and each battery reports on its own.

Q: Can this replace my AGM or gel battery directly?
A: Yes, it is designed as a replacement for most applications currently running a deep cycle gel, AGM or flooded lead acid battery. Bear in mind the charging profile differs, so the charger or DC-DC unit needs to be set for lithium, with a maximum charge voltage of 14.6V.

Q: How much usable capacity do I actually get?
A: All 400Ah, which is 5120Wh. That is the real difference against lead acid, where discharging much past half flattens the cycle life. A 400Ah lithium does the work of roughly 800Ah of lead acid.
