This adapter takes an Anderson-style SB50 plug on one end and splits it into a male and a female MC4 solar connector on the other. It lets you connect an SB50-terminated battery, DC-DC or fuse block to a solar panel wired with the standard MC4 pattern.

The run is 600mm of 6mm² tinned copper twin, with terminations pre-crimped and heat-shrunk at the factory. Terminals are silver-plated inside a polycarbonate housing, and the twin cores run through a UV-treated flame-retardant corrugated loom so the adapter stands up to sitting rigged on a roof rack, tucked under a canopy or run through a caravan gland.

The MC4 side follows the industry-standard solar pattern that almost every 12V portable and roof-mount panel uses. Rate the whole run to whatever the panel produces under short-circuit conditions plus a fuse margin, and check the MC4 pair are fully clicked home before commissioning.

Pairs with

  • Anderson-style SB50 — plugs into standard 50A DC ports
  • MC4 pair — male and female mate with panel pigtails
  • Tinned copper 6mm² — comfortable current headroom
  • 600mm working length — reaches most panel-to-battery runs
  • UV-treated loom — flame-retardant sleeve for outdoor use
  • Silver-plated terminals — low resistance across the join

Anderson-style SB50 to MC4 solar adapter cable
12V, 24V and 48V DC systems

Q: What is an Anderson-style SB50 plug?
SB50 is a small-block, two-pole, genderless DC connector originally designed by Anderson Power Products and now made by many manufacturers to the same physical pattern. Both halves are the same shape so either end can plug into the other, and they carry automotive current on the order of 50A.

Q: What is an MC4 solar connector?
MC4 is the industry-standard weatherproof connector on almost every 12V portable and roof solar panel. It comes as a male and a female half that lock together, and it is rated for outdoor UV, moisture and roughly 30A continuous depending on the manufacturer.

Q: Why is one MC4 male and the other female?
Solar panels are usually wired with a male MC4 on the positive lead and a female on the negative. The adapter carries a matching pair so it plugs straight into a panel's factory pigtails without a separate reverser.

Q: What cable size is used and why does it matter?
The run is 6mm² tinned copper, which carries around 45A comfortably at 12V over this length. Solar current on a single panel sits well below that, so 6mm² gives a generous margin and very low voltage drop.

Q: What voltage range does it work across?
Designed for 12V, 24V and 48V DC systems typical of automotive, marine and small off-grid solar setups. The SB50 pattern is a low-voltage DC connector and is not for mains AC.

Q: Does it need to be fused?
Yes. Fuse the run on the battery side, close to the battery, and size the fuse to the maximum current the connected panel can push under short-circuit conditions plus a small margin. Never above the cable's rating.

Q: How weather-resistant is it?
The MC4 pair is IP-rated when locked together. The SB50 half is splash-tolerant but not sealed, so it wants to sit under a bonnet, in a boot or inside a caravan cabinet rather than exposed on the roof.

Q: Is this a genuine Anderson or a genuine Staubli MC4?
The SB50 half is Anderson-style, the same physical pattern that mates with a genuine Anderson SB50. The MC4 half is a compatible-pattern connector that mates with standard MC4. If you specifically need Staubli-certified MC4, ask us before ordering.
