The Bushman DC130-X is the under-bench upright in the Heavy Duty DC-X range. At 130 litres it holds enough for a couple on a long trip or a family on a short one, and at 750mm tall it is sized to slide in under a standard kitchen bench. It draws about 1.5 amp hours per hour at 25°C ambient.

Bushman fit a Nidec Danfoss BD35HD compressor, a 60W variable speed unit that ramps between roughly 2A and 4.5A depending on what the fridge actually needs rather than slamming on and off at full noise. Over a 24 hour period that is what keeps the average draw down. The whole unit is tropical rated and holds temperature in ambients up to 43°C.

The freezer is deliberately deep and narrow rather than wide, which frees up the fridge section so you can stand tall bottles upright instead of laying them down. Shelves are height adjustable heavy duty wire, there is a plastic crisper tub under a single-piece perspex shelf, and the door balconies are deep enough for 2 litre milk bottles with built-in stainless rails so nothing shifts on corrugations. An internal fan keeps the temperature even from top to bottom, and the door is reversible to suit whichever way your cabinetry opens.

A mounting kit is supplied and the fridge comes with a 1.2 metre Anderson lead fitted. Bushman support four mounting methods: internal sleeves, the supplied mounting kit fascia, custom brackets on the M5 threaded inserts, or a Bushman DC130-X aluminium fridge box. Ventilation needs 2 rear vents of 400cm² free area each. Run it on its own dedicated circuit straight back to your battery bank.

If you are weighing this up against the smaller DC85-X, both fridges are 550mm deep and mount the same way, so it comes down to the opening you have. The DC130-X needs a cut out of 755mm high by 530mm wide. The DC85-X needs 630mm high by 480mm wide and gives up 45 litres of space.

Ventilation: two rear vents required, each with a free cross-section of at least 400cm2. A 400 x 200mm vent frame with a 400cm2 free-area grille meets one vent. The compressor cavity must vent to outside or to the main room, not into a sealed cabinet

Wiring: dedicated circuit direct to the battery bank. 4mm2 cable is acceptable for a typical install; 6mm2 is our preferred size and gives headroom on longer runs. Fit a 15A fuse close to the battery, and an isolation switch rated at least 20A on 12V or 10A on 24V

Power supply: 12V or 24V DC only. Never connect directly to 240V AC. Any inverter must be pure sine wave. If wired through a shunt or battery management system, connect the fridge to the terminal closest to the battery

Orientation: do not lay the fridge on its back, top or sides, or at any angle over 30 degrees. If it has been laid over, stand it upright for 12 hours before switching it on

Thermostat: start on setting 3, wait 24 hours, then adjust one notch at a time. Settings 3 to 5 suit most installs. Above 5 causes rapid ice build-up

Q: How do I mount my Bushman DC130-X fridge?
A: Four ways: using the supplied mounting frame, purchasing a Bushman DC130-X aluminium fridge box, using the internal mounting sleeves, or creating your own brackets.

Q: Does the door protrude past the outside of the fridge cabinet when opened at 90°?
A: No, the door does not protrude past the cabinet, however the door handle does, by about 20mm.

Q: How tall is the DC130-X door?
A: The door is 745mm tall including the handle. Move the handle to the side of the door and the door height without the handle is 730mm.

Q: Can I fit 2L milk bottles in the door?
A: Yes. 2L milk bottles fit in the DC130-X door.

Q: What are the dimensions of the wire shelves?
A: Approximately 440mm wide and 340mm deep.

Q: What are the freezer dimensions?
A: Approximately 210mm wide, 350mm deep and 90mm tall, with rounded corners.

Q: What size battery and solar do I need?
A: It depends on your setup, solar input, state of charge, other loads on the same battery, ambient temperature and how often the fridge is opened. Bushman's starting point is around a 180Ah AGM or 100Ah lithium battery with 300W of solar, but that assumes a fridge-only circuit in average conditions.

Q: Can the door open from the other side?
A: Yes. The hinges move from the right side to the left, and the door handle moves to match.

Q: What colour is it available in?
A: Matte black only.

Q: Can I run it from 240V power?
A: Yes, using a 240V to 12V transformer. Most customers run their fridge from a battery bank all the time and use a smart battery charger to maintain the battery when 240V is available.

Q: What are the internal dimensions of the crisper tub?
A: Approximately 420mm wide, 320mm deep and 90mm tall.

Q: Can I remove the crisper when the door is only open 90°?
A: Yes, but only without the perspex shelf in place. With the perspex shelf, there is not enough room to lift the crisper out.

Q: What does Tropical T rating actually mean?
A: Climate class T is the hottest rating, confirming the fridge holds temperature in ambients up to 43°C. Fridges without a T rating slow down or run full-time once ambient climbs above 32°C.

Q: What is a variable-speed compressor?
A: Instead of switching between full-on and off, the Nidec Danfoss BD35HD ramps its draw between 2A and 4.5A to match what the fridge actually needs. That keeps the average power draw down and reduces starting-current surges on the battery.
