The Bushman DC190L-X is a full height upright in the Heavy Duty L series, and the one to look at if you want a genuine freezer rather than a small compartment inside the fridge. Of the 190 litres total, 45 litres is a proper separate freezer, which is enough to actually shop for a week rather than just keep ice and a few things frozen.

It uses a Secop Danfoss BD80CN High Capacity compressor paired with a full copper cooling system, and Bushman rate the whole unit climate class 'T' tropical, holding temperature in ambients up to 43°C. Power consumption is roughly 2.0 amp hours per hour at 25°C, rising to about 3.0 at 35°C, which is reasonable for a fridge of this size and freezer capacity. The interior is a single piece moulding, so there are no seams and joins to crack or collect moisture over a few thousand kilometres of corrugations.

Shelving is adjustable, the door storage is large, there is internal LED lighting, and the door is reversible so it can hinge to suit your layout. A full mounting kit is supplied along with a 2.3 metre Anderson lead, which is long enough to reach a battery bank that is not directly behind the fridge.

At 53kg it is a genuine two-person lift, and worth planning for before it arrives. There are two different cut outs depending on how you fit it: flush into the cabinetry needs 1385mm high by 605mm wide by 570mm deep, while fitting with the supplied mounting kit needs the same height and depth but 615mm of width. Ventilation is the detail that decides whether it performs — the compressor needs free air in and out, with the clearances set out in the owner manual below, and it should run on its own dedicated circuit back to the battery bank.

The closest fridge to this one is the DC225L-X. The two share the same BD80CN compressor, the same 600mm width and the same 45 litre freezer, so every one of the extra 35 litres goes into the fridge section rather than the freezer. What it costs you is height and power: the DC225L-X stands 1550mm tall against 1380mm here, weighs 57kg against 53kg, and draws around 2.4 amp hours per hour at 25°C against 2.0. If your cabinet opening is under about 1.5 metres, the DC190L-X is the one that fits.

Mounting options: Bushman support three methods for the DC-L series. 1. Six internal M5 threaded sleeves in the cabinet: two per side in the fridge and one per side in the freezer. 2. The supplied two-piece mounting kit fascia, fitted with M5 bolts. 3. Two chassis bolt holes at the rear of the compressor mounting for extra support in mobile installations

T-latch: a T-latch is supplied inside the crisper tub and must be fitted for any mobile installation such as a caravan, boat or RV

Cut-out sizes differ by mounting method. Flush fit: 1385mm H x 605mm W x 570mm D. With the mounting kit: 1385mm H x 615mm W x 570mm D. Both allow a 50mm gap at the rear when the doors sit proud of the cabinetwork

Ventilation: two vents required, one at the bottom and one at the top of the fridge cavity, each with a free cross-section of approximately 600cm2. A 500 x 250mm fluted vent provides approximately 600cm2 of free air flow. Vents can be to the outside environment or the general area where the fridge is located

Wiring: dedicated circuit direct to the battery bank. 4mm2 cable is acceptable for a typical install; 6mm2 is our preferred size and gives headroom on longer runs. Fit a 15A fuse close to the battery, and an isolation switch rated at least 20A on 12V or 10A on 24V

Power supply: 12V or 24V DC only. Never connect directly to 240V AC. Any inverter must be pure sine wave. If wired through a shunt or battery management system, connect the fridge to the terminal closest to the battery

Orientation: do not lay the fridge on its back, top or sides, or at any angle over 30 degrees. If it has been laid over, stand it upright for 12 hours before switching it on

At 53kg the DC190L-X is a two-person lift. Plan the approach and any door removal before delivery day

Thermostat: start on setting 3, run for 2 to 3 days, then adjust one notch at a time only if the fridge is not reaching 4 degrees C. Do not use setting 7

Q: How do I mount my Bushman DC190L-X fridge?
Into a cavity using the supplied mounting kit, or flush using the internal mounting sleeves. Some installs use custom brackets to suit the vehicle.

Yes. The door curves outwards in the centre. When opened 90° the centre of the door protrudes 25mm past the side of the fridge cabinet.

Q: Can I fit 2L milk bottles in the door?
Yes. 2L milk bottles fit in the DC190L-X door.

Q: How deep is the fridge with the doors removed?
525mm deep with the doors removed, useful for getting it in through a caravan door.

Q: What are the dimensions of the shelves?
Fridge wire shelves are approximately 480mm wide by 240mm deep. Freezer wire shelves are approximately 430mm wide by 260mm deep.

Q: What are the freezer dimensions?
Approximately 440mm wide, 300mm deep and 330mm tall, with rounded corners.

Q: What size battery and solar do I need?
It depends on your setup: solar input, state of charge, other loads on the same battery, ambient temperature and how often the fridge is opened. Bushman's starting point is around a 240Ah AGM or 140Ah lithium battery with 400W of solar, assuming a fridge-only circuit in average conditions.

Q: Can the doors open from the other side?
Yes. The hinges move from the right side to the left, and the door latch moves to match.

Q: What colour is it available in?
Matte black only.

Q: Can I run it from 240V power?
Yes, using a 240V to 12V transformer. Most installs run the fridge from a battery bank full-time and use a smart battery charger to maintain the battery when 240V is available.

Q: Will it replace a Dometic RM4601 or RM4605 3-way fridge?
Yes. The DC190L-X is a direct swap replacement for the Dometic RM4601 and RM4605 gas fridge.

Q: Will it replace a Dometic RPD190 12V fridge?
