A 12V 70Ah deep cycle GEL battery built for repeat discharge in caravans, marine systems, mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs and off-grid power setups. Runs house loads, fridges and auxiliary systems on an aux-battery setup without the maintenance of flooded wet cells. Sits comfortably in enclosed battery boxes, under seats and in tight cabinetry where a vented flooded battery can't go.

The GEL electrolyte is immobilised in silica so the battery is spill-proof and can mount on its side or at an angle. The case is ABS plastic to UL94-HB flame rating; M6 brass insert terminals accept standard ring-lug cables; carry handles sit flush on the top for lifting a 23.5kg battery into a tight bay. Dimensions are 260 long by 169 wide by 210 high (235 to the top of the terminals).

Rate the charger to GEL profile, not AGM or wet, and keep continuous charge current under 15A. Over-voltage from a flooded-profile charger will boil the gel and cook cycle life. Not a cranking battery; pair with a proper starter battery for engine starting, and fuse any aux loads at the battery with a MIDI or ANL fuse sized to the cable.

  • GEL electrolyte — spill-proof, mounts in any orientation
  • M6 insert terminals — standard ring-lug fit
  • 750A max discharge — handles brief surge loads
  • Sealed maintenance-free — no electrolyte top-ups needed
  • ABS flame-rated case — meets UL94-HB
  • Carry handles — balanced lift at 23.5kg
  • Wide temp range — operates -40 to 60°C

Mount upright, on its side, or at an angle. The sealed GEL design is spill-proof and vibration-tolerant. Secure with a hold-down strap, lip clamp or purpose-built battery box to stop movement in a rough-road setup. Allow 10-15mm clearance around all sides for airflow and future removal.

Terminals are M6 brass inserts. Use ring-lug cables sized to the load, torque to 6-8 Nm (manufacturer recommendation for M6). Grease the terminals with battery terminal protector or petroleum jelly after fastening to prevent corrosion.

Fuse the positive cable at the battery with a MIDI, MEGA or ANL fuse sized to the cable (not the load). For a 50mm² cable serving aux loads this is usually a 150A MIDI. Keep the fuse within 300mm of the battery post per best practice.

Charge from a GEL-profile charger. Float voltage 13.6-13.8V, cyclic 14.2-14.4V (both at 25°C). Max continuous charge current 15A. Do NOT use an AGM or wet-cell profile. The higher voltages will damage the gel electrolyte and shorten cycle life.

12V deep cycle GEL battery
Caravans, camper trailers, 4WDs with aux battery setups
Marine house banks (sealed, side-mountable)
Mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs (12V systems)
Solar backup and off-grid power storage
Engine starting. Use a dedicated cranking battery
Under-bonnet mounting voids warranty (gel degrades in engine-bay heat)

Q: What's the difference between GEL, AGM and flooded (wet) batteries?
A: GEL uses silica-thickened electrolyte that stays immobile. Spill-proof, side-mountable, best for vibration and deep cycling. AGM uses a fibreglass mat holding the electrolyte, giving higher max current and better short bursts. Flooded wet cells hold liquid acid: cheapest per Ah but spill-prone, upright only, needs a vented box with water top-ups. Pick GEL for enclosed deep-cycle setups where mounting flexibility matters.

Q: What does Ah at C20 actually mean?
A: It's the capacity when the battery is discharged over 20 hours. 70Ah at C20 means it delivers 3.5A continuously for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5V (end-of-life for a 12V battery). Faster discharge (C5 or C1) delivers less total energy. Rule of thumb is roughly 15-20% less at C5.

Q: Can I use this battery for starting an engine?
A: No. Deep cycle construction uses thicker plates for repeat discharge, which trades off peak current for longevity. Starting an engine demands 300-600A for a few seconds, which this battery can deliver (max 750A for 5s), but repeated cranking will damage it. Pair a dedicated starter battery with the GEL for an aux setup.

Q: What charger should I use for a GEL battery?
A: One with a GEL-specific charge profile. Float voltage 13.6-13.8V, cyclic (bulk/absorption) 14.2-14.4V at 25°C. Max continuous current 15A. Most quality multi-chemistry chargers (CTEK, Victron, Projecta, Redarc) include a GEL preset; select it before connecting.

Q: Can I charge a GEL battery with an AGM profile charger?
A: No. AGM profiles use 14.4-14.8V absorption and up to 15-16V equalisation. GEL cells break down above 14.4V and the electrolyte can bubble and permanently reduce capacity. Always use the GEL profile for a GEL battery.

Q: Can this battery be mounted on its side?
A: Yes. The gel electrolyte is immobilised in silica so the battery is spill-proof in any orientation. Keep the terminals accessible for maintenance checks and ensure the hold-down secures against vibration.

Q: What size cable and fuse should I use?
A: Size the cable to the load. A 50A continuous load from a 12V battery needs 10-16mm² depending on run length. Fuse the positive within 300mm of the battery post with a MIDI, MEGA or ANL fuse sized to the cable's current rating, not to the load. A 50mm² aux feed typically takes a 150A MIDI.

Q: How long will this battery last?
A: Depends on how deeply it's cycled. GEL batteries deliver roughly 500-700 cycles at 50% depth of discharge, 1000+ at 30%. Running it flat (100% DoD) regularly cuts life to a couple of hundred cycles. In a solar/caravan setup cycling 30-50% nightly, 4-6 years is realistic.

Q: What's the warranty?
A: 12 months Century warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Mounted under bonnet voids warranty: Century excludes under-bonnet installs because engine bay heat accelerates gel degradation.

Q: How does this compare to a Century C12-105DG or C12-40DG?
A: Same chemistry, different capacity. The C12-40DG is 37Ah (lighter, smaller, mobility and backup use); C12-75DG at 70Ah is the mid-caravan size; the C12-105DG at 105Ah suits bigger house-battery banks. Step up when the daily load exceeds roughly 25Ah/day for the 70Ah; step down for small backup use only.
