A 12V 82Ah flooded deep cycle battery that runs 4WD dual-battery house banks, caravan battery boxes and marine house loads from a maintenance-free design. Powers 12V fridges, LED lights, water pumps and small inverter loads for days at a time without a water top-up. Drops into standard N70-size battery trays with D polarity (negative post right as viewed from the terminal face), which covers Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda and Ford 4WD dual-battery setups, caravan battery compartments, boat helms and camper trailer banks.

What sets it apart

Full-frame cast plates with glass mat separators and Platelock™ construction take corrugated-track vibration and keep active material locked in place through repeated deep cycles. Central venting with a flame arrestor replaces the row of filler caps on a traditional flooded battery, so there is no watering across normal service life. Standard automotive posts combined with wing-nut studs on each terminal let a crimped lug or a wing-nut lead sit on the same post without an adapter.

Century rates the case for under-bonnet use, which puts it in the small group of deep cycle batteries built to take engine bay temperatures without accelerated water loss. That matters on a dual-battery 4WD where the auxiliary sits in the engine bay rather than at the back of the ute.

Charging and fusing

Charge it on a wet-cell flooded profile, not AGM and not lithium. A DC-DC charger with a WET or FLOODED setting is the right companion for alternator charging; a straight alternator feed overcharges and cooks the plates on cycle. Fuse the house circuit at the battery with a MIDI or MEGA sized for the cable gauge: a 100A MIDI covers a 6mm² run, a 150A MEGA covers 8mm² and above. Parallel two of these for a 12V 164Ah house bank, or wire two in series for a 24V 82Ah system.

  • 82Ah C20 capacity — runs a 2.5 A fridge for roughly 16 hours at 50% DoD
  • Maintenance-free design — central venting, no water top-up across service life
  • Platelock™ construction — plates stay locked through corrugated-track vibration
  • Full-frame cast plates — thicker grid structure for repeated deep cycling
  • Under-bonnet rated — built for engine bay heat without accelerated water loss
  • D-polarity multi-terminal — standard automotive post plus wing-nut stud per terminal
  • Flame arrestor venting — safer in enclosed boxes and dual-battery trays

Mount upright on an insulated battery tray with a secure hold-down bracket. Torque the standard or wing-nut terminals to 10 to 12 Nm using a crimped lug or soldered-eye terminal; never use pliers.

Keep 15 to 20 mm clearance around the central vent to let gas escape. Never cover the vent with foam, tape or sealant, even in an enclosed battery box.

Pair with a wet-cell flooded charge profile on your DC-DC charger (not AGM, not lithium). A straight alternator feed without a DC-DC manager will overcharge the battery on long drives and shorten service life.

Fit a MIDI or MEGA fuse at the battery sized to the cable gauge: a 100A MIDI covers a 6mm² run, a 150A MEGA covers 8mm² and above. Fuse the circuit at the battery, not at the load end.

Fits standard N70-size battery trays with D polarity (negative post right as viewed from the terminal face).

Q: What does MF actually mean on a flooded deep cycle battery?
MF stands for Maintenance Free. The NS70TX MF uses a sealed-vent flooded design with low-water-loss plates, so you never need to top it up with distilled water across its service life. A traditional flooded deep cycle needs water checks every few months; this one does not.

Q: Is this a true deep cycle battery or a dual-purpose?
True deep cycle. The plate design is thicker and uses full-frame castings, built for repeated discharge and recharge cycles down to 50% depth of discharge rather than short cranking bursts. Pick a dual-purpose battery if you also need to crank an engine from the same battery; a true deep cycle like this one is paired with a separate starter.

Q: What does C20 mean when the capacity says 82Ah C20?
C20 is the discharge rate used to measure capacity. The battery delivers 82 amp-hours when drawn down at a 20-hour rate, around 4.1 A continuous. Draw faster and you get less capacity. C20 is standard for deep cycle batteries and makes the number comparable across brands.

Q: Can I charge this with my AGM-profile DC-DC charger?
Not ideal. Flooded deep cycle wants a wet-cell charge profile with slightly higher absorption voltage, around 14.6 to 14.8 V at 25°C. Most DC-DC chargers have a WET or FLOODED setting; use that, not AGM. Running a flooded battery on an AGM profile under-charges it over time and the battery will not hold rated capacity.

Q: What is the polarity on this battery and does it fit my car?
D polarity, 12V multi-terminal. Negative post sits on the right as you look at the terminal face, positive on the left, with both standard automotive posts and wing-nut studs on each terminal. It fits NS70-sized battery trays (standard N70 case with D polarity), which covers a lot of Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda and Ford 4WDs and SUVs.

Q: Can I fit this under the bonnet?
Yes. It is one of the few deep cycle batteries actually rated for under-bonnet use. Century built the NS70TX MF to handle engine bay temperatures without accelerated water loss, which is why workshops use it as the auxiliary battery in dual-battery 4WD kits.

Q: How long will it power a 12V fridge?
A typical 40L compressor fridge draws around 2.5 A continuous at a 30°C ambient. 82Ah at 50% depth of discharge gives 41 Ah of usable capacity, which is roughly 16 hours of fridge runtime. Add solar or alternator top-up through the day and the fridge runs indefinitely.

Q: What is the warranty and what does it cover?
12 months against manufacturing defects, per Century's own warranty. It does not cover installation damage, deep discharges to zero that destroy the plates, or use outside the specified charging profile. Follow the install and charge guidance above and the warranty stands.

Q: Can I use a car charger to maintain it in storage?
Only if the charger has a flooded or wet-cell mode. Set it to flooded, let it bring the battery to float (around 13.5 V), then leave it. A trickle charger without the right profile will either boil water off or sulphate the plates.

Q: Can I pair two in series for a 24V house bank?
Yes. Two NS70TX MF units in series give 24V 82Ah; four in series give 48V 82Ah. Match the batteries from the same production batch and keep them temperature-balanced. For a bigger 12V bank, parallel two for 12V 164Ah instead.
