A 12V 37Ah deep cycle gel battery built for cycling applications that need steady power without maintenance. Runs mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs and golf carts; feeds marine electronics, caravan lights, solar storage and UPS back-up; sits inside enclosed cabinets, battery boxes and tilt-prone mounts where a flooded battery would be a problem.

The electrolyte is immobilised in a thick gel, so the battery is spill-proof and can mount on its side. The plates are cast thick for deep-discharge tolerance, the ABS case is flame-arrestor fitted, and the carry handles make a 13.2kg lift straightforward. Terminals are M6 inserts that accept common ring lugs for straight-in wiring.

Charge with a profile that holds float at 13.6 to 13.8V and cycle at 14.2 to 14.4V, and limit charge current to 8A for the longest service life. This is not an engine-cranking battery (deep-cycle plates, not high-current starting) and it is not a 24V unit on its own; wire a matched pair in series for 24V systems.

  • Gel electrolyte — spill-proof and mounts on its side
  • Thick cast plates — stand up to deep discharge cycles
  • Vibration resistant — handles off-road and marine mounting
  • Flame arrestor — safer inside enclosed cabinets
  • Carry handles — easier to lift and position
  • M6 terminal inserts — accept common ring lug sizes
  • Maintenance free — sealed, no topping up water

Mount the battery flat, on its side, or at any angle inside an enclosed cabinet or battery box. The sealed gel electrolyte will not leak at any orientation and does not vent hydrogen under normal use.

Terminate with M6 ring lugs crimped to cable sized for the circuit load. Torque bolts to 6-8 Nm; over-torquing cracks the terminal insert.

Fit an inline fuse within 300mm of the positive terminal, rated below the first downstream cable's current limit. For most mobility and recreational installations a 30-50A fuse is typical.

Charge with a gel-compatible or AGM-compatible profile set to 14.2-14.4V cycle and 13.6-13.8V float. Smart chargers and DC-DC chargers with gel/AGM settings suit; equalisation (over 14.4V) will damage this battery.

12V deep-cycle gel power for cycling applications
Mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, golf carts (OEM replacement where M6 terminal and 198x166x171mm case fit)
Marine electronics, caravans, camper trailers, solar systems, UPS, mobility aids
Enclosed cabinets, battery boxes, and installations where tilt or vibration is a concern
Not for engine cranking (deep-cycle plates, not high-current cold cranking)
Not for 24V systems on its own; wire a matched pair in series for 24V

Q: What does GEL actually mean on a battery?
A: The sulphuric acid electrolyte is mixed with silica so it sets as a thick gel instead of staying liquid. The gel doesn't spill, doesn't need topping up, and lets the battery sit on its side or at an angle without leaking. GEL batteries are a sub-type of VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) alongside AGM.

Q: What's the difference between GEL and AGM?
A: Both are sealed lead-acid, both are maintenance-free. GEL uses silica-set electrolyte and tolerates deep discharge and heat better; AGM uses fibreglass mat and delivers more peak current and faster charging. For low-draw cycling in a hot or tilted installation, GEL is the pick; for high-current cranking or heavy inverter loads, AGM is usually a better match.

Q: What does C20 mean on the 37Ah rating?
A: C20 means the battery delivers its full 37Ah when discharged slowly over 20 hours (roughly 1.85A). Faster discharge yields less capacity (Peukert's law), so a 5-hour draw delivers under 37Ah. For most mobility and recreational loads, the C20 figure is the one that matters.

Q: Can I mount this battery on its side?
A: Yes. The gel electrolyte stays put at any angle including on its side, upright, or inverted (though inverted is uncommon in practice). Keep the terminals clear of adjacent conductors and allow a few millimetres of clearance for the vent.

Q: Is this battery truly maintenance-free?
A: Yes. The case is sealed, there are no caps to open, and no water needs topping up. The valve regulates internal pressure during the rare over-charge event. Just keep the terminals clean and the charge regime correct.

Q: Can I use this to start an engine?
A: No. Deep-cycle plates are thick and designed for a steady, long discharge, not for the 400-800A pulse an engine starter needs. The 400A 5-second pulse rating is for occasional surges (DC motor start, winch brief run), not sustained cranking. Use a dedicated cranking battery for engines.

Q: What charger do I need?
A: Any charger with a GEL or AGM profile that floats at 13.6-13.8V and cycles at 14.2-14.4V, limited to 8A charge current. Smart multi-stage mains chargers, DC-DC chargers from a vehicle alternator, and MPPT solar controllers with a GEL setting all suit. Avoid chargers that only output a fixed voltage above 14.4V (equalise mode) as this damages gel batteries.

Q: How do I wire two of these for 24V?
A: Wire two matched batteries in series: positive of battery A to the load, negative of battery A to positive of battery B, negative of battery B to ground. Both batteries must be the same age, same capacity and same chemistry; mixing old and new weakens the pair. For 24V, charge with a 24V-rated charger (not two 12V chargers).

Q: How many cycles will it last?
A: Century does not publish an exact cycle life for the C12-40DG, but a typical deep-cycle GEL battery delivers 400-600 cycles to 50% depth of discharge and over 1,200 cycles when kept to 30% depth of discharge. Shallow discharges and correct charging extend life; deep flattening (below 10.5V) permanently reduces capacity.

Q: How long will this run my fridge, light, or accessory?
A: Divide usable capacity (around 18Ah at 50% depth) by the device's current draw. A 2.5A fridge drawing an average 1A over 24 hours uses roughly 24Ah, so this battery runs it under a day before needing a recharge. A 1A LED awning light runs for roughly 18 hours.
