A maintainable 12V starter battery that cranks small single-cylinder engines on ride-on mowers, tractor mowers and garden equipment up to roughly 20 horsepower. Delivers 240 cold-cranking amps for first-pull starts in Perth summers and holds 35 minutes of reserve for the ignition circuit and lights. Fits most Cox, Rover, Victa, Husqvarna, John Deere and MTD ride-on mowers that take a 12N24-series battery.

Lead-acid build with calcium-antimony cast plates for longer life and better deep-discharge recovery than standard antimony. Vibration-resistant internals handle the knock-around of a mower deck, and vented filler caps let you top up electrolyte as the battery ages, so a few drops of distilled water once a season keeps it going for years. Case is 185 by 125 by 160mm (180mm over the terminals), weighs 7.4kg, and takes lug terminals in standard D-polarity layout.

Not a car starter. 240 CCA will not crank a V6 even in warm weather. Keep the mower on charge over winter if it sits unused for more than six weeks or the lead sulphation that kills small batteries will set in. Top the electrolyte up before every mowing season and check the terminals for green copper sulphate; a smear of petroleum jelly keeps them clean.

Lift the battery into the mower tray and confirm the positive terminal sits on the correct side for your harness. This battery is standard D-polarity, so the positive post is on the right when you face the terminals from the front. Fit the positive lead first with a 10mm socket, then the negative; snug both terminals so the lead cannot rock but do not crank down hard enough to split the lug.

A smear of petroleum jelly on the terminals keeps corrosion off. Fasten the hold-down strap or clamp before the first start, since mower vibration will walk an unclamped battery across the tray and chew the leads.

Top up electrolyte through the filler caps with distilled water before every mowing season. Keep the cells covered but not overflowing; a few millimetres above the lead plates is enough.

Q: What does CCA actually mean?
Cold Cranking Amps, the current the battery can push into a starter motor for 30 seconds at minus 18 degrees Celsius without dropping below 7.2V. More CCA means an easier start on a cold morning. 240 CCA is right for a single-cylinder mower engine; a car V6 wants 400 CCA or more.

Q: What does RC mean?
Reserve Capacity, how many minutes the battery holds up a steady 25-amp load before the terminal voltage drops to 10.5V. 35 minutes of RC means the mower ignition, lights and electric PTO stay alive if the charging circuit fails mid-cut.

Q: What does 12N24-4 mean?
12 is the voltage, N is the Japanese-standard case code, 24 is the amp-hour capacity, and the final 4 is the terminal layout (positive right, negative left, which is called D polarity). The 12N24-3 is the same battery with mirrored terminals.

Q: Will this fit my mower?
It fits most Cox, Rover, Victa, Husqvarna, John Deere and MTD ride-on mowers and compact tractors that take a 12N24-series battery. Measure your tray; the case is 185mm long by 125mm wide by 180mm tall over the terminals and weighs 7.4kg. If your old battery has terminals on the opposite sides, you need the 12N24-3 version instead.

Q: Can I use this to start a car?
No. 240 CCA will crank a single-cylinder mower engine or a small petrol generator; a four-cylinder car wants 400-600 CCA and a diesel ute wants 700 CCA or more. Use a Century DIN or N-series starter battery for cars.

Q: What is a maintainable battery and do I actually have to do anything?
Maintainable means the cell caps come off so you can top up the electrolyte with distilled water as it evaporates over the years. Low-maintenance design means you only check it once or twice a year, not weekly. Keep the plates covered but do not overfill; just above the lead tops is enough.

Q: What is calcium-antimony and why does it matter?
It is the alloy used in the lead plates. Standard antimony gives you cranking power but corrodes faster; pure calcium holds charge longer but cannot handle repeated deep discharges. Calcium-antimony sits between the two, with better cranking than pure calcium, longer life than straight antimony, and vented caps so you can top up water when it finally does cook off.

Q: Can I leave the mower sitting over winter?
Not without putting the battery on a trickle charger. Mower batteries sulphate fast when left flat because they are small and the parasitic draw from the ignition switch runs them down inside a few weeks. A 1 to 2A trickle charger (about $40 at most hardware stores) left plugged in through winter keeps it at float voltage.

Q: How long should this battery last?
Three to five mowing seasons in Perth conditions if you keep the electrolyte topped up and do not let it sit flat. Mower batteries live or die by how often they are deeply discharged; one or two full flat episodes will halve the remaining life.
