A mid-size DIN starter battery that cranks diesel and larger-petrol European and Japanese imports in Australian conditions. Delivers 730 cold cranking amps and holds 135 minutes of reserve capacity. Fits Audi A4/A6 TDI, VW Passat/Golf TDI, BMW 3 Series diesel, Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel, Range Rover Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe diesel, Mazda CX-5/CX-9 diesel and other mid-size imports with the DIN75L factory tray.

Measures 315 by 175 by 175 mm and weighs 18.7 kg. Posts are STD tapered with C polarity (positive on the right as you face the terminals). Calcium plates hold roughly 2 percent per month self-discharge when idle. The case carries a central vent and flame arrestor, recessed posts, a built-in state-of-charge indicator eye and flush carry handles for cross-vehicle handling.

It's a flooded calcium wet-cell, not an AGM or EFB, so it isn't the right replacement for a factory Stop/Start system that calls for EFB or AGM chemistry. Series-pair two for a 24V setup if the vehicle needs it; a single DIN75L is 12V only.

What sets it apart

Century tests the Hi Performance DIN range in Australian climatic chambers against heat, dust and vibration cycles that match the local car park, not northern-hemisphere data extrapolated down.

Vibration-resistant plate welds and double-insulated separators handle corrugations, pot-holed station wagons and work-ute use without shorting internally.

The DIN75L case sits in the OE tray on European and Japanese diesel platforms without a spacer or shim, so the OE hold-down clamps as designed.

Charging, mounting and fusing

The flooded calcium wet-cell takes a standard charger profile: 14.4 to 14.7 V bulk and 13.5 to 13.8 V float at 20 degrees C, with temperature compensation on long sessions.

Modern Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes and Range Rover platforms from roughly 2008 onward need a battery registration or BMS reset with a dealer-level scan tool after the swap. Without it, the alternator defaults to a low-charge mode and the new DIN75L sulphates within weeks. Book the reset or bring the vehicle to the Elevate workshop.

Mount in the OE tray using the factory top-clamp or bottom J-hook, torque the posts to 10 to 12 Nm, and grease exposed terminal metal with battery terminal protectant. Fuse the vehicle's own starter and OE loom at their original points, not at the post.

For a 24V series pair, use matched cable gauge between the posts, start both batteries at the same state of charge, and fuse the whole run once at the start.

  • 730 CCA — Cranks mid-size diesel and petrol engines
  • 135 min reserve — Carries accessories through an alternator failure
  • 80Ah capacity — Supports modern electronics and short city runs
  • Calcium plates — Low self-discharge for long sits
  • Maintenance-free — No water top-ups across service life
  • STD tapered posts — Direct OE replacement on DIN75L trays
  • Vibration-resistant — Plate welds hold on corrugations
  • Central vent, flame arrestor — Contained gas path for in-cabin installs

Note radio codes, window memory and other learnt settings before disconnecting. Clamp a memory saver (10A fused jumper from a 12V source to the vehicle 12V side) if the ECU should stay live. Disconnect negative first, then positive.

Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover platforms from roughly 2008 onward register batteries in the alternator control module. Without a dealer-level scan tool to tell the ECU a new battery is fitted, the alternator defaults to low-charge mode and the DIN75L sulphates within weeks. Book the reset or bring the vehicle to the Elevate workshop.

Mount in the OE tray using the factory top-clamp or bottom J-hook. Torque the posts to 10 to 12 Nm using a torque wrench. Grease exposed terminal metal with battery terminal protectant. Reconnect positive first, then negative. Confirm cranking and that no fault lamps are set.

Fuse the vehicle's own starter and OE loom at their original points, not at the battery. For a 24V series pair, use matched cable gauge, matched state of charge at commissioning, and a single fuse at the start of the run.

Confirm the OE part number or physical tray dimensions with Century's Battery Finder or the Elevate workshop before fitting.

Q: What does DIN75L actually mean?
A: It's the European DIN size code for this battery's physical format: a 315 by 175 by 175 mm case with the positive post on the left in L polarity or on the right in C polarity. The 75 is the capacity grouping. Vehicle makers that spec a DIN75L tray use this exact case shape; swapping to a bigger DIN85 means a longer case that won't sit in the smaller tray.

Q: What does MF mean?
A: Maintenance Free. The caps are sealed and the battery doesn't need water top-ups across its service life. The central vent routes any gas through a single port with a flame arrestor, which is why MF batteries can sit under seats or in cabins where open-vent batteries can't.

Q: What does CCA mean and why does 730 matter?
A: Cold Cranking Amps is the current the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at minus 18 degrees C while holding at least 7.2V. 730 is Century's rating for this exact SKU. In practice it means the DIN75L cranks a cold mid-size diesel on a 2 degree C Perth winter morning without labouring.

Q: What does RC mean and why does 135 minutes matter?
A: Reserve Capacity is how many minutes the battery can supply a 25A load before voltage drops to 10.5V. 135 minutes means that if the alternator fails on the highway, the battery runs headlights, ignition, wipers and fuel pump for a bit over two hours before cut-off. It also carries parasitic loads (alarm, immobiliser, ECU memory) during long sits.

Q: What's the difference between DIN75L and DIN75LH?
A: Same length and width, different height. DIN75L is 175 mm tall; DIN75LH is 190 mm tall. If the OE tray and hold-down were set for the 190 mm case, the 175 mm DIN75L sits low and the hold-down won't clamp. See the sibling DIN75LH MF (part 115147) for the 190 mm case.

Q: What does C polarity mean?
A: It's the Century shorthand for which post is which. C polarity has the positive post on the right as you face the terminals and the negative on the left. D polarity is the mirror. OE wiring is cut to length for one polarity only, so the wrong one leaves the positive cable too short to reach.

Q: Does this suit a Stop/Start vehicle?
A: No. Factory Stop/Start systems cycle the battery heavily and need EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) chemistry to survive. A flooded calcium wet-cell like the DIN75L fails in months on a Stop/Start car. Century's ISS Active range carries the DIN75L in EFB; look for the EFB badge on the lid.

Q: Why do modern European vehicles need a BMS reset after the swap?
A: Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes and Range Rover platforms from roughly 2008 onward track the fitted battery's age and charge-acceptance in the alternator control module. Fitting a new battery without telling the ECU leaves the alternator in a low-charge mode and the new battery sulphates within weeks. A dealer-level scan tool clears the record and registers the new battery. Elevate's workshop handles this at installation, or any auto-electrician with the right scan tool can do it.

Q: Can I run two in series for 24V?
A: Yes. Two DIN75L in series makes a 24V 80Ah bank. Use matched cable gauge between the posts, start both at the same state of charge, and fuse the whole run once at the start, not between the batteries. A single DIN75L is 12V only.

Q: How long will this battery last?
A: Century backs it with a 30-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Typical AU service life for a flooded calcium starter in a mid-size diesel passenger car is 3 to 5 years, depending on heat soak, charge system health and how often the vehicle sits unused for long stretches. Treat under three years as a warranty question.
