A 12V dual-purpose dry cell AGM battery that puts 85 amp-hours into dual-battery 4WD trays, caravans, camper vans, boat house banks and motorhomes, with enough cranking power to start a 4- or 6-cylinder vehicle on its own. Runs fridges, LED lights, water pumps and inverter loads from the deep-cycle side; cranks engines and handles under-bonnet mounting from the starting side. Fits anywhere a sealed AGM makes sense, including enclosed cabins, under seats, battery boxes and under-bonnet starter positions where flooded batteries would gas or spill.

The case is 260 by 168 by 208 mm, 215 mm to the top of the standard SAE posts, and 22.8 kg assembled. Sealed glass-mat construction holds the electrolyte in the separators, so the battery mounts upright or on its side without leaking or venting. The fire-retardant ABS case walls, SAE tapered posts drop into N70ZZ-sized trays, and a thermal management system handles under-bonnet heat cycling in Australian conditions.

Charge with an AGM-profile charger or a DC-DC set to AGM mode. Flooded-profile voltages run too high and dry out the cells. Fuse at the battery with a MIDI or ANL rated to the cable gauge (typically 100 to 200 A for 25 to 50 mm² cable). This is a 12V battery; two in series makes a 24V bank at the same 85 amp-hours, not double capacity.

  • 85Ah capacity — amp-hour rating at the C20 (20-hour) discharge rate
  • 620 CCA — cold cranking amps at -18°C for engine starting
  • 160 min reserve — minutes to 10.5V at a 25A sustained draw
  • Sealed dry cell — spill-proof construction, mounts upright or on its side
  • Standard SAE post — drop-in replacement for N70ZZ-sized dual-battery trays
  • Fire-retardant ABS case — safe for enclosed cabin and under-bench installs
  • Under-bonnet rated — handles engine-bay heat cycling in Australian conditions

Mounting

Dry cell AGM mounts upright, on its side, or inverted. Secure with a hold-down bar or box lid so the posts don't take knocks. Fits standard N70ZZ-sized trays. Allow 10 mm clearance above the posts for ring-terminal access.

Terminal torque

Standard SAE tapered posts. Hand-tighten the clamp to seat on the post, then torque to 10 Nm. Apply dielectric grease over the posts and clamps to prevent corrosion.

Circuit protection

Fuse at the battery, not at the load. MIDI or ANL rated to the cable gauge: 100A for 16 to 25 mm², 150A for 25 to 35 mm², 200A for 35 to 50 mm². Fit the fuse within 300 mm of the positive post.

Charger profile

Set the charger to AGM. Bulk 14.4 to 14.7 V, absorption held for 2 hours, float 13.5 to 13.8 V. Minimum useful bulk current is 8.5 A (below that the charger stays in trickle mode and never finishes). Practical bulk range is 10 to 25 A (10 to 30% of C20). Direct alternator charging damages the battery; use a DC-DC charger set to AGM.

12V dual-purpose AGM for cabin, under-seat, under-bonnet, caravan or marine house-bank installs
12V vehicle, van, boat and off-grid systems
Dual-battery and dual-purpose (starting + deep cycle)
Under-bonnet, cabin, under-seat and sealed-enclosure installs
24V single-battery installs (pair two in series for 24V at the same 85Ah)
Flooded-profile chargers (AGM-specific charger or DC-DC required)

Q: What does "dry cell AGM" actually mean?
A dry cell AGM battery uses glass-mat separators to hold the electrolyte in place rather than free-flowing liquid. The battery is sealed and spill-proof; it mounts upright, on its side, or inverted without leaking or venting.

Q: Can I use this to start my 4WD and run a fridge off it?
Yes, that's exactly what dual-purpose means. 620 CCA cranks a 4- or 6-cylinder engine. 85Ah of deep-cycle capacity runs a 60W fridge drawing 5A for roughly 10 to 14 hours at 50% depth of discharge. One battery does both jobs in a single-battery setup, or sits as the auxiliary in a dual-battery system.

Q: What does "C20" mean on the capacity rating?
C20 is the standard deep-cycle convention. The battery delivers 85Ah when discharged slowly over 20 hours (4.25A continuous). Faster discharge rates give less than 85Ah because internal resistance losses increase with current.

Q: What's "reserve capacity" and why does it matter?
Reserve capacity is minutes to 10.5 V at a 25A draw. 160 min means the battery holds up a 25A load (roughly a 300W inverter) for about 2.5 hours before voltage drops below usable. Useful for sizing fridge or camping-light runtime.

Q: Can I mount this under the bonnet?
Yes. Unlike most AGM batteries, the SSB HVT Dry Cell range is rated for under-bonnet heat cycling. The thermal management system handles typical Australian engine-bay temperatures.

Q: What charger do I need?
Any charger with an AGM profile (bulk 14.4 to 14.7 V, absorption 14.4 to 14.7 V, float 13.5 to 13.8 V). Flooded profile voltages are too high and dry out the cells over time. If you're charging from an alternator, pair with a DC-DC charger set to AGM mode; direct alternator connection damages the battery.

Q: Is it compatible with standard N70ZZ trays?
Yes. Physical dimensions and the SAE tapered-post pattern match the N70ZZ group-size footprint. Drop-in replacement for most dual-battery trays sized for the N70ZZ.

Q: How long will it last if I draw 50% capacity daily?
Industry reference for premium dual-purpose AGM batteries is 400 to 800 cycles at 50% depth of discharge, which translates to roughly 1 to 2 years of daily cycling. Lighter cycling (20% DoD) extends service life to 3 to 5 years. SSB doesn't publish a specific cycle-life figure for the HVT range.

Q: Can I wire two in series for 24V?
Yes. Two in series gives 24V at 85Ah (same amp-hours, double voltage). Both batteries must be the same age, chemistry, and state of charge before pairing. Two in parallel gives 12V at 170Ah (same voltage, double amp-hours).

Q: What's the warranty?
SSB publishes a 36-month warranty for private starting applications, 24 months for private deep-cycle use, and 12 months for commercial installations. Retain proof of purchase for any warranty claim.
