A dual-purpose AGM dry cell battery that puts 105 amp-hours and 780 cold-cranking amps behind a single 12V post pair. Starts the engine on cold mornings and keeps a fridge, LED lights, water pump and inverter running once the key is off. Fits caravans, dual-battery 4WD trays, boat house banks, motorhomes and under-bonnet starter positions where a sealed battery is needed.

Sealed glass-mat construction holds the electrolyte in the plate separators, so the battery mounts upright, on its side or upside down without leaking or venting gas. The case is fire-retardant ABS and measures 305 by 168 by 207 mm (213 mm over the terminals), weighs 27 kg and takes standard SAE tapered posts for drop-in replacement of N70ZZ-sized flooded batteries. Approved for under-bonnet installation up to 65°C ambient.

Charge with an AGM-profile smart charger or a DC-DC with an AGM setting; a standard flooded-profile charger undercharges the AGM and shortens its service life. Fuse the positive cable at the battery per the cable gauge, and avoid using this as a single-battery 24V service — the HVT70ZZD is a 12V unit, so 24V means two in series, not one.

  • 105Ah capacity — 20-hour deep cycle rating for house loads
  • 780 CCA — reliable cold-start cranking for 6-cyl petrol and diesel
  • 225 min reserve — nearly 4 hours at 25A with engine off
  • Sealed dry cell — mounts upright, side or inverted, no venting
  • Standard SAE post — drop-in for N70ZZ flooded replacement
  • Fire-retardant ABS case — enclosed-space and cabin-safe
  • Under-bonnet rated — engineered for 65°C ambient operation

Mount and secure

Mount upright, on its side, or upside down. The sealed dry cell holds the electrolyte in the glass mat separators and will not leak in any orientation. Secure with a top clamp or J-hook bracket sized for the 305 by 168 by 207 mm case. Allow at least 10 mm clearance around the terminals, and ensure the positive and negative posts cannot short against the vehicle body or nearby metalwork.

Terminal and torque

The HVT70ZZD takes standard SAE tapered posts. Torque the terminal clamps to 10 Nm. Use properly crimped cable lugs sized to carry the expected load, typically 70 mm² (00 B&S) for starter current and 25 mm² (4 B&S) for most auxiliary loops. Apply a thin coat of terminal grease to prevent corrosion.

Fuse at the battery

Fit a MIDI, MEGA or ANL fuse within 300 mm of the positive terminal, sized to protect the cable. A 100A MIDI suits a 25 mm² auxiliary loop, a 200A MEGA suits a 70 mm² starter main, and a 300A ANL suits a 95 mm² inverter feed. The battery itself can deliver several hundred amps into a short; the fuse is what keeps the cable from cooking its insulation.

Charger profile

Use an AGM-profile smart charger or a DC-DC with an AGM setting. Bulk charge at 10 to 15 A, absorption at 14.4 to 14.8 V, float at 13.2 to 13.5 V. A flooded-profile charger undercharges the AGM, leaves sulphation on the plates and shortens service life. If the only option is a flooded charger, step through the equivalent voltages manually or fit an AGM-aware controller.

Universal fitment, 12V dual-purpose AGM battery for caravans, 4WDs, campers, boats, motorhomes and under-bonnet starter positions.
12V vehicle and auxiliary systems with AGM-compatible charging
Enclosed cabin, under-bench, or under-bonnet installations (sealed, no venting required)
Not suitable for 24V single-battery service (12V unit; use two in series for 24V)
Not suitable for charging from a non-AGM-profile charger (undercharges and shortens life)

Q: What does "dry cell AGM" actually mean?
AGM stands for absorbed glass mat, where the electrolyte is held in a fibreglass separator between the plates rather than sloshing around as a liquid. It behaves like a dry cell for mounting (any orientation, no venting, sealed) but is chemically a lead-acid battery and uses lead-acid charging voltages. Not interchangeable with lithium or GEL for charger profile.

Q: Can this battery start the engine and run a fridge?
Yes, dual-purpose is the design brief for the HVT range. The 780 CCA gives it genuine cranking performance (equivalent to many starter-only batteries), and the 105 Ah C20 deep-cycle rating supports several days of fridge, lights and water-pump use between charges. A dual-purpose battery is slightly less specialised at each job than a dedicated starter or dedicated deep cycle, but for a caravan, dual-battery 4WD or marine house bank where one battery handles both, it is the right pick.

Q: What is reserve capacity, and why 225 minutes?
Reserve capacity (RC) is how many minutes the battery can deliver a steady 25A draw before dropping to 10.5V (industry low-voltage cutoff). The HVT70ZZD's 225 minutes means nearly four hours of 25A load, roughly a decent-sized 12V fridge plus a few LED lights and a water pump cycling. RC is more useful than Ah alone for estimating runtime with the engine off.

Q: How does this compare to a standard flooded N70ZZ?
Same physical case size (305 × 168 × 207 mm, standard N70ZZ group) and drop-in replacement. The AGM dry cell holds up better to vibration, mounts in any orientation, does not spill, does not emit hydrogen gas during normal operation, and can be installed inside the cabin or an enclosed battery box. A flooded N70ZZ costs less upfront but needs upright mounting, periodic electrolyte top-up and venting.

Q: Can this be mounted inside the caravan cabin?
Yes. The HVT dry cell is sealed, VRLA (valve-regulated lead acid) and does not emit hydrogen during normal operation. It can be mounted inside a cabin, under a bench seat, or in an enclosed battery compartment without external venting. Secure it against movement, keep it away from heat sources, and protect the terminals from accidental shorting.

Q: What charger should be used?
An AGM-profile smart charger, a DC-DC charger with an AGM setting, or a solar MPPT with AGM profile. Bulk at 14.4 to 14.8 V, float at 13.2 to 13.5 V, bulk current around 10 to 15 A. A flooded-profile charger undercharges the AGM and shortens its service life.

Q: Will it work in a 24V system?
Not as a single battery, since the HVT70ZZD is a 12V unit. For 24V service, wire two matched HVT70ZZD batteries in series (positive of one to negative of the other). Use batteries of the same age and state of charge when pairing in series.

Q: How long will it last?
Published service life depends on how deeply it is discharged. SSB publishes a 36-month private-use starting warranty and a 24-month private-use deep-cycle warranty. In practice, dual-purpose AGM batteries used mostly as deep cycle give 4 to 7 years when recharged after each use and not routinely taken below 50% state of charge. Daily discharge to 20% state of charge roughly halves that.

Q: Can this be used under the bonnet?
Yes. The HVT70ZZD is rated for under-bonnet installation and is specified for up to 65°C ambient operating temperature. The fire-retardant ABS case and sealed VRLA construction make it suitable where a flooded battery would be marginal. Under-bonnet AGM batteries age faster than cabin-mounted ones because of the heat, so expect somewhat reduced service life compared to a boot-mounted install.

Q: What does the warranty cover?
36 months private-use starting, 24 months private-use deep-cycle, and 12 months commercial use, all against manufacturing defects. It does not cover damage from undersized cables, flooded-profile charging, physical impact, repeated discharge below 50% state of charge, or installation errors. Keep the receipt and the battery for any warranty claim.
