A complete install kit built around the Redarc BCDC Classic40 (BCDC1240D), a 40A DC-DC charger with built-in MPPT solar input. Charges a 100 to 200 Ah auxiliary battery from the alternator while driving and from a solar panel when the sun is up, prioritising solar when both are connected. Fits caravans, campers, canopies, utes and 4WDs running a dual-battery setup where the second battery needs to charge properly without cooking the alternator.

The kit pairs the BCDC1240D (165 by 120 by 37 mm, 1 kg) with a vehicle-specific or universal bracket to mount against OEM points under the bonnet, plus a dual-MIDI fuse holder, two MIDI fuses, and an Elevate-made fuse-holder bracket that sits above the starter battery. Pick the vehicle-specific bracket for Prado 150, Isuzu D-MAX, Holden Colorado RG, Mitsubishi Triton MR, Pajero QF, Nissan Patrol Y61 GU, Hilux N70 or N80, Landcruiser 70 Series, J100 and J105, 200 Series, 300 Series, or go with a universal or no-bracket option at checkout.

The BCDC1240D accepts 9 to 32V DC input (12V or 24V vehicle) and outputs 12V only. Use the BCDC2420D for a 24V auxiliary bank. A battery bank 75 Ah or smaller gets overcharged at 40A; step down to the Redarc BCDC Classic25 for small AGM or small lithium setups. Install by a licensed auto electrician or an experienced DIYer. Mains-voltage work on the house side needs a licensed sparky under AS/NZS 3000.

Mounting and fusing

The charger needs a 60A input fuse close to the starter battery and a 60A output fuse close to the auxiliary battery. This kit supplies the output-side fuse holder (dual MIDI, raised or flush), two 60A MIDI fuses, and an Elevate fuse-holder bracket that mounts the holder above the starter post. Supply a separate 60A input fuse at the starter if the vehicle does not already have an auxiliary feed. Use 6 mm² (10 B&S) cable minimum on runs under 1.5 m; step up to 8 mm² or 13.5 mm² (8 or 6 B&S) on longer rear-of-vehicle runs where voltage drop matters.

Install under the bonnet against OEM mounting points with the vehicle-specific bracket, or against the firewall with a universal bracket. The charger clears summer under-bonnet heat up to 80°C, but keep it off the exhaust manifold and leave 25 mm of airflow around the heatsink.

Wire the charger input (red +) to the starter battery through a 60A input fuse mounted close to the starter. Wire the charger output (red +) to the auxiliary battery through the kit's dual-MIDI fuse holder with a 60A MIDI fuse at each end. Earth both negatives to a clean chassis point near each battery, not the engine block.

Set the battery chemistry profile via the DIP switch on the charger before powering on. For LiFePO4 batteries that have a BMS cut-off, add a Redarc Smart Start SBI if the alternator could pull the starter battery under 12.0V during a long stop.

Q: Can I use this with a lithium battery?
Yes. The BCDC1240D supports LiFePO4 lithium batteries along with AGM, Gel, standard lead-acid and calcium chemistries. Select the correct chemistry profile on the DIP switch during install.

Q: Can I run solar and alternator at the same time?
Yes. The BCDC1240D has dual inputs and will accept the alternator and a solar panel simultaneously. Redarc's Green Power Priority pulls from solar first and tops up from the alternator only when solar is not enough.

Q: Does it include a solar controller?
Yes, the MPPT solar regulator is built into the BCDC1240D. A separate solar controller is not required for a single panel feeding this charger.

Q: What battery bank size does it suit?
Lead-acid banks over 200 Ah and lithium banks over 100 Ah. For a smaller 75 to 100 Ah lead-acid bank or a sub-100 Ah lithium bank, step down to the Redarc BCDC Classic25 instead.

Q: Will it work on a 24V vehicle?
The input accepts 9 to 32V DC, so a 24V truck or heavy-vehicle alternator is fine as an input. But the output is 12V only. For a 24V auxiliary bank, use the Redarc BCDC2420D instead.

Q: Why pick a vehicle-specific bracket over the universal one?
Modern 4WDs have very little spare space under the bonnet. The vehicle-specific brackets bolt the charger onto existing OEM mounting points without drilling, keeping it off the firewall and clear of heat sources. The universal brackets fit most other vehicles with a bit of trimming.

Q: What size cable do I need?
6 mm² (10 B&S) minimum on short runs under 1.5 m from the starter battery; 8 mm² or 13.5 mm² (8 or 6 B&S) on longer rear-of-vehicle runs where voltage drop matters more. Match the fuse to the cable: 60A for 6 mm², up to 100A for 13.5 mm².

Q: Can I install this myself?
Yes if you are an experienced DIYer comfortable with 12V wiring and have the right crimp tools. If not, Elevate's licensed auto electricians (EC17073) can fit it in our workshop. The Redarc instructional video is included with the kit.
