A JIS N65D starter battery that fits older Toyota HiLux and 4Runner, Prado 90 and 120 Series, Mitsubishi Pajero NH-NM petrol, Nissan Patrol GQ and GU petrol and other Japanese 4WDs built around a 285 by 185mm footprint with D polarity and STD standard-post tapered terminals. Delivers 750 cold cranking amps and 135 minutes reserve for a dependable crank in cold weather and enough spare for short accessory loads with the engine off.

Calcium wet-cell flooded chemistry sealed in a maintenance-free case with central venting and a flame arrestor on the lid. Mud rack base keeps sediment away from the plates. A state-of-charge indicator eye on the lid shows green, clear or red at a glance. The hold-down ledge on the lower case takes a vehicle-specific top clamp or J-hook per the OEM fitting.

Starter-duty flooded wet-cell, not AGM and not deep-cycle. Don't run house loads off this battery; put a dedicated auxiliary behind a DC-DC for that. For 24V series pairing use two matched batteries of the same age and state of charge.

What sets it apart

Designed and manufactured in Australia by Century Yuasa for Australian heat and vibration. Platelock plate suspension reduces internal movement over corrugations. The flame arrestor on the lid stops a vented spark propagating back into the cells. Central venting, state-of-charge indicator and mud rack base are standard on the Hi Performance range.

Charging, mounting and fusing

Flooded calcium wet-cell charges at 14.4 to 14.7V bulk and 13.5 to 13.8V float at 20°C. Apply -18 mV per °C temperature compensation on hot days and on long touring stints with the engine running. Seat the battery on the OEM tray, torque the hold-down clamp to 5 to 8 Nm (standard Toyota hook-down spec), and fuse any auxiliary feed at the starter stud rather than at a downstream junction.

  • Australian-made — built by Century Yuasa
  • 750 CCA — strong cold-crank for N65D-tray petrols
  • 135 min reserve — spare runtime with the engine off
  • Calcium wet-cell — longer plate life and lower water loss
  • Flame arrestor lid — stops a vented spark propagating back
  • Mud rack base — keeps sediment clear of the plates
  • Charge indicator — lid eye shows SOC at a glance
  • Platelock plates — vibration-resistant internal construction

Verify the battery footprint and terminal layout against the vehicle's OEM battery tray before fitting. N65D batteries measure 285 by 185mm with D polarity (JIS D 5301) and STD standard-post tapered terminals; vehicles cut for N70ZZ, N50 or DIN layouts need a different battery.

Seat the battery on the OEM tray and torque the hold-down clamp to 5 to 8 Nm (standard Toyota hook-down spec). The hold-down ledge on the lower case takes either a vehicle-specific top clamp or a J-hook per the OEM fitting.

Fuse any auxiliary feed at the starter stud rather than at a downstream junction. For 24V series pairing use two matched batteries of the same age and state of charge.

Charging profile: calcium wet-cell flooded, bulk 14.4 to 14.7V, float 13.5 to 13.8V at 20°C, with -18 mV per °C temperature compensation. BMS reset after battery replacement is typically not required on JIS-tray vehicles; some modern European marques from 2008 onwards do need one.

Fitment: Older Japanese 4WDs and passenger vehicles with the 285 by 185mm JIS N65D battery tray, D polarity and STD standard-post tapered terminals.
Toyota HiLux (older, 2.4 and 2.7 petrol, 3L and 5L diesel, 1KZ)
Toyota 4Runner (older)
Toyota Prado 90 and 120 Series
Mitsubishi Pajero NH-NM petrol
Nissan Patrol GQ and GU petrol
Other Japanese passenger vehicles with factory N65D tray
Not for stop-start (ISS) vehicles — EFB or AGM required
Not for house-battery or deep-cycle duty — use a dedicated deep-cycle instead
Not for N70ZZ, N50 or DIN tray vehicles — physical footprint does not match
Always cross-check against the vehicle's current OEM battery before ordering.

Q: What does N65D MF mean?
N65D is the JIS D 5301 battery code for a 285 by 185mm Japanese-size battery with D polarity. MF stands for maintenance-free: no top-up water required under normal use.

Q: What is D polarity and does it matter?
Polarity tells you which side the positive terminal sits on. Vehicles are factory-wired for one polarity only. If the OEM battery was D polarity, the replacement must be D polarity too, or the cables will not reach without being re-routed. Check the vehicle's existing battery or the owner's manual before ordering.

Q: What does STD terminal mean?
STD stands for standard tapered posts, the common large-post Japanese automotive terminal with the positive post nominally 17.5mm and negative 15.9mm. Clamps and lugs for STD posts are not interchangeable with SP small-post (11mm/13mm) terminals.

Q: What is CCA and is 750 CCA enough?
Cold Cranking Amps is the current the battery delivers for 30 seconds at -18°C down to 7.2V, per SAE J537. 750 CCA is in the mid-range for N65D-tray petrol 4WDs and small diesels; check the OEM-fit CCA value for the specific vehicle year before stepping down.

Q: What is Reserve Capacity (RC)?
RC is how many minutes the battery can deliver 25A continuous at 25°C before falling to 10.5V. 135 minutes gives roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes of modest accessory draw with the engine off.

Q: Can I use this as a house battery for a fridge or inverter?
No. This is a starter battery built for short, high-current cranks, not for the deep repeat discharge a 12V fridge or an inverter runs through a house battery. For auxiliary loads behind a DC-DC, use a deep-cycle AGM, EFB or lithium battery instead.

Q: Is this battery stop-start (ISS) compatible?
No. Stop-start vehicles need EFB or AGM batteries that can handle the extra cycling. Fit an EFB or AGM in the OE size for an ISS vehicle.

Q: Can two of these go in series for a 24V system?
Yes, but pair two of the same age and state of charge, charge them both before pairing, and never mix an old battery with a new one in series. The weaker battery drags the stronger one down and both age faster.

Q: What vehicles typically take an N65D?
Older Toyota HiLux (2.4 and 2.7 petrol; 3L, 1KZ and 5L diesel), Prado 90 and 120 Series, 4Runner, Mitsubishi Pajero NH-NM petrol, Nissan Patrol GQ and GU petrol, and other Japanese 4WDs built around the 285 by 185mm JIS footprint. Always cross-check the vehicle's OEM battery size before ordering.

Q: What is the warranty?
12 months against manufacturing defects under normal use, per Century's current Hi Performance warranty statement for this SKU.

Q: Is the battery ready to use out of the box?
Yes, Century ships N65D MF factory-filled and charged. Check the state-of-charge indicator on the lid before fitting: green means ready, clear means needs charging, red means replace.
