A 12V 42Ah maintenance-free starter battery that holds Century's Ultra Hi Performance NS40Z tray spec. Fires modern NS40Z-fit Japanese petrol imports (Toyota Hilux, Hiace, Prado petrol, Ford Courier, Mazda B-Series, Nissan Navara petrol) with 410 CCA on tap, and keeps a 65 minute reserve for short-trip and accessory-heavy drivers. Sibling NS40ZSX MF covers the same tray in D polarity for mirrored vehicles.

Measures 196 by 128 by 201 mm (220 mm total height) and weighs 10.9 kg in a conventional poly case with a central vent, flame arrestor, carry handles, state-of-charge indicator and a mud-rack hold-down base. C polarity puts the positive post at the left as you look down on the top. Posts are STD tapered lead cones to suit the OE clamp style on NS40Z-tray vehicles. Calcium-calcium plate chemistry drops self-discharge to roughly 2% per month at 20°C.

This is a flooded calcium wet-cell starter battery, not an AGM, EFB or deep-cycle. Pair two in series for 24V use only when both are the same age and state of charge. Fuse at the starter or OE harness and keep the clamp torque within the post range (M6 at 5 to 7 Nm, M8 at 8 to 10 Nm).

What sets it apart

Designed and built in Australia for Australian climatic cycles. The Ultra Hi Performance line adds Century's over 15% extra starting power and 30% longer life vs the standard Hi Performance line, run through a mud rack base, platelock reinforcement, double-insulated separators and a flame-arrested lid.

Charging, mounting and fusing

Charge on the flooded wet-cell profile at 14.4 to 14.7 V bulk and 13.5 to 13.8 V float at 20°C with temperature compensation. AGM or lithium profiles will over-cook the plates. Mount on the vehicle's existing OE tray with the mud-rack base locating into the saddle, torque the posts (M6 at 5 to 7 Nm, M8 at 8 to 10 Nm), and fuse at the starter or OE loom not at the battery. For 24V series pairings, use matched cable gauge and a single fuse at the start of the run.

  • 410 CCA — fires 12V engines with worn starters and in cold starts
  • 65 min reserve — keeps lights and accessories live when the engine is off
  • 42 Ah capacity — standard mid-range sizing for NS40Z tray
  • Calcium plates — roughly 2% self-discharge per month at 20°C
  • Maintenance-free — sealed lid, no top-up required
  • STD tapered posts — fits OE clamp hardware on NS40Z-tray vehicles
  • Mud rack base — locates into OE saddle, resists vibration shift
  • SOC indicator — top-of-lid eye shows green charged, dark/clear flat

Plug a memory saver into the OBD port or 12V socket before disconnecting the OE battery so the ECU, clock, radio, window drop and seat memory stay set. Disconnect the negative post first, then the positive. Lift the old battery out and clear the tray of surface rust or fluid film with a damp rag.

Drop the new battery onto the tray with the mud-rack base locating into the OE saddle and C polarity oriented with the positive post at the LEFT. Fit the OE hold-down (NS40Z-tray vehicles typically use a top clamp or bottom J-hook). Reconnect positive first then negative. Torque the terminal clamps within the post range: M6 bolts at 5 to 7 Nm, M8 bolts at 8 to 10 Nm. Overtightening cracks lead posts, undertightening loses current under load and burns the terminal.

Charge on the flooded wet-cell profile at 14.4 to 14.7 V bulk and 13.5 to 13.8 V float at 20°C, with temperature compensation at roughly minus 20 mV per °C above 20°C. AGM or lithium profiles will over-cook the plates and shorten service life. If the vehicle has been off-road or sitting flat for weeks, mains-charge to full before putting it back into service.

Fuse the main feed at the starter or OE harness, not at the battery post. For 24V series pairings run matched gauge cable between the two batteries, keep both the same age and state of charge, and fuse at the start of the run only. Modern European marques built from roughly 2008 onward may need a BMS reset after a battery swap using VCDS, ODIS, ISTA, Xentry or Autologic so the charging curve is re-calibrated. NS40Z-tray Japanese imports typically do not.

Q: What does NS40ZLSX actually mean?
It is the JIS case code for a 42Ah class battery that fits a Japanese NS40Z tray. The LSX suffix means Low (short case height) with Left-polarity, Standard terminals and the eXtended Ultra Hi Performance plate pack. Swap-in replacement for OE batteries carrying NS40Z, NS40ZL, NS40ZLX or 55B19L markings on the top label when polarity matches.

Q: NS40ZLSX MF vs NS40ZLX MF, what's different?
Same case, same C polarity, same 42Ah. The LSX runs STD (standard tapered) posts to match older OE clamp hardware; the LX runs SP (small post) terminals for newer OE clamps. Check your current battery's post diameter against the clamp before ordering.

Q: What does MF mean?
Maintenance-Free. The lid is sealed, there are no filler caps to top up with distilled water, and the central vent routes any gas evolved during charging through a flame arrestor. The battery still has electrolyte inside the cells (flooded calcium wet-cell), it just does not need periodic topping up.

Q: What does CCA actually mean?
Cold Cranking Amps. The current (in amps) the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at minus 18°C while staying above 7.2 V. Higher CCA fires engines with worn starters, thick cold oil or a long crank. 410 A is the Ultra Hi Performance figure for the NS40Z family, roughly 15% above the standard Hi Performance NS40ZL (360 A).

Q: What does RC mean?
Reserve Capacity. The number of minutes the battery can carry a 25A load from a full charge before dropping below 10.5 V. 65 min means short runs with lights, radio and the odd accessory on will not flatten the battery if the alternator stops charging.

Q: What does C polarity mean?
Looking down on the top of the battery with the posts closest to you and the label the right way up, the positive (red) post is at the LEFT and the negative (black) is at the right. D polarity is the mirror. Fit the wrong polarity and the OE cables will not reach without being extended. Use sibling NS40ZSX MF for D-polarity vehicles.

Q: Will this work in a Stop-Start vehicle?
No. Stop-Start (ISS) vehicles cycle the battery through hundreds of partial-state-of-charge discharge events per week and need an EFB or AGM battery built for that duty cycle. A flooded Ultra Hi Performance like this one will fail inside 12 to 18 months in that service. Check your OE battery label for EFB or AGM markings and pick an EFB or AGM replacement if present.

Q: Can I pair two in series for 24V?
Yes, so long as both are the same age, state of charge and from the same batch where possible. Series pairing adds voltage, not capacity (2 x 42Ah 12V batteries in series = 42Ah at 24V, not 84Ah). Fuse at the start of the run only and use matched gauge cable between the two batteries.

Q: How long will it last?
Century covers it for 40 months against manufacturing defects. Typical service life for an Ultra Hi Performance calcium battery in AU conditions is 4 to 6 years depending on heat exposure, depth-of-discharge pattern and whether the charging system holds the correct float voltage. Deep-discharge cycles (flat batteries) shorten the life more than high ambient temperatures.

Q: Does my car's computer need resetting after a battery swap?
For NS40Z-tray Japanese imports typically no. For modern European marques from roughly 2008 onward (Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover) a dealer-level scan tool (VCDS, ODIS, ISTA, Xentry, Autologic) re-registers the new battery with the energy management system so the alternator charges to the correct profile. Skipping the reset tends to shorten the new battery's life on those vehicles.
