A ratchet crimper that squeezes pre-insulated R/B/Y terminals and larger insulated lugs onto cable from 0.5 to 16mm². The oval die profile seats the nylon insulation around the barrel in one closing stroke. Suits auxiliary wiring, trailer plugs, fuse-block tails, caravan 12V runs and marine panels where every terminal needs a clean, insulated finish.

Steel body with a chemically blackened finish for corrosion resistance, PVC grips, 230mm handle and 0.64kg in the hand. Three colour-coded die positions match red (0.5-1.5mm²), blue (1.5-2.5mm²) and yellow (4-6mm²), with extended positions for 10mm² and 16mm² heavy insulated lugs. The ratchet locks until the stroke completes and releases with a side-mounted lever when a half-crimp needs backing out.

Match the die position to the terminal colour, or use the extended cavity for 10mm² and above. Crimping a yellow terminal in the red die under-crushes the barrel and the terminal pulls off under load. Strip the cable to full barrel length and seat the terminal fully in the die before squeezing; a stub crimp lets the strands slip.

Pairs with

  • Oval die profile — crushes insulation and barrel in one stroke
  • Ratchet mechanism — locks until the crimp completes
  • Side-release lever — backs out a half-crimp cleanly
  • Three colour positions — matched to IEC Red, Blue, Yellow sleeves
  • Extended cavity — handles 10mm² and 16mm² heavy insulated lugs
  • Blackened steel body — resists rust in workshop and in-vehicle use

workshop and in-vehicle crimping tool.
Suits all 12V, 24V, 36V and 48V DC auxiliary wiring
Marine, caravan, 4WD, trailer and general electrical use
Not for uninsulated bare copper lugs, use the matching hex or ratchet lug crimper instead

Q: What does pre-insulated actually mean?
Pre-insulated terminals have a coloured nylon or PVC sleeve already moulded over the barrel. The sleeve insulates the connection against short circuits and gives a visual size code (red 0.5-1.5mm², blue 1.5-2.5mm², yellow 4-6mm²). This crimper's oval die squeezes the barrel through the insulation without splitting the sleeve.

Q: What are the three colour positions for?
Red seats 0.5-1.5mm² terminals (20-16 AWG), blue seats 1.5-2.5mm² (16-14 AWG) and yellow seats 4-6mm² (12-10 AWG). The IEC colour code matches the terminal sleeve to the die cavity, so matching the die position to the terminal colour gives the correct crimp force.

Q: Can it crimp 10mm² and 16mm² terminals as well as the colour-coded sizes?
Yes. The tool has extended die positions above the three R/B/Y stops for larger pre-insulated terminals up to 16mm² (10 AWG). These larger terminals are usually translucent or metallic-jacketed rather than colour-coded.

Q: Why pick this ratchet crimper over the hex lug crimper or hydraulic lug crimper in your range?
Different die geometry for different terminals. This oval-die ratchet crimper is for pre-insulated R/B/Y and larger insulated terminals up to 16mm², the oval shape crushes the barrel without splitting the nylon sleeve. The [crimping-tool-copper-cable-lugs-hex-6-50mm2] and [hydrualic-lug-crimper-up-to-70mm2] use hex dies that leave a six-sided compression, right for bare copper lugs, wrong for insulated terminals (the hex points cut the nylon sleeve). Pick this tool for terminals with insulation; pick the hex or hydraulic for bare copper lugs.

Q: How do I know the crimp is right?
The ratchet clicks and releases automatically when the stroke completes, that is a full crimp. Pull-test by hand after: a good crimp holds the terminal firmly on the cable with no twist or slide. If it pulls off, the die was too large for the cable size; crimp again in the next smaller position.

Q: Can I use plain non-insulated spade or ring terminals in this tool?
No. Non-insulated terminals need a hex-style die that forms the barrel against bare copper, oval dies leave an under-crushed crimp that pulls off under load. Use the [crimping-tool-uninsulated-and-copper-cable-lugs-6-16mm2] for uninsulated copper lugs in the same range.

Q: What handle length and how much pressure is needed?
230mm handles give enough leverage to crimp 16mm² one-handed with firm pressure. The ratchet locks progressively, so no need to squeeze flat-out in one go; two or three progressive squeezes complete a yellow or 16mm² crimp without hand fatigue.

Q: How do I release a half-crimped terminal if the ratchet locks before it is seated right?
The side-mounted release lever opens the jaws instantly. Press it, pull the terminal out, re-seat and crimp again. Never force the ratchet backwards against the lock.

Q: Does it come with replaceable dies?
No. The three colour-coded positions and extended cavities are machined into the fixed jaws, no spare die sets to track. If the jaws wear out after years of workshop use the whole tool gets replaced.

Q: What cable types work in it?
Fine-strand automotive, marine and TXL/GXL copper wire from 0.5-16mm². The die seats stranded conductors cleanly; solid-core household cable crimps too but is unusual for insulated-terminal work.
