This is a 50Ω RG58AU-grade low loss coaxial cable, 5mm in diameter, built for UHF, VHF and other RF communication runs — the antenna feedline used between a UHF CB or VHF radio and its aerial in 4WDs, trucks, caravans, boats and base stations.

Construction is a multi-strand tinned copper centre conductor, foam PE dielectric and a foil-plus-braid double shield inside a UV-stabilised PVC jacket, giving a stable 50Ω impedance and solid screening against interference along the run. Sold by the metre so you can cut exactly the length your install needs, from a short in-cabin jumper to a full roof-to-dash run.

This cable is sold bare with no connectors fitted — pick up matching RG58 connectors (PL259, BNC, FME or TNC, depending on your radio and antenna) separately to finish each end.

You'll also need

  • Low-loss coax — foil + braid double shield cuts signal loss
  • 50Ω impedance — matched to UHF/VHF radio gear
  • 5mm diameter — flexible enough for tight routing
  • Foam PE dielectric — stable impedance along the run
  • UV-stabilised PVC jacket — holds up outdoors and underbonnet
  • Sold per metre — order exactly the length you need

Q: What does "RG58AU" actually mean?
RG-58A/U is the US MIL-spec cable designation — "RG-58" identifies the cable family, "A" marks a design revision (a stranded, not solid, centre conductor for better flexibility), and "U" means it meets the general-purpose "Universal" spec. Australian suppliers commonly drop the slash and write it as "RG58AU", but it isn't an Australian-specific designation — it's the same cable family used worldwide for 50Ω UHF/VHF radio feedlines.

Q: What does "50Ω impedance" mean and why does it matter?
Impedance describes how the cable resists the flow of a radio signal along its length. Your radio, cable and antenna all need to be matched to the same impedance — 50Ω is the standard for UHF/VHF two-way radio gear — otherwise you lose signal and risk damaging the radio's output stage. This cable is built to 50Ω ±3Ω.

Q: What does "low loss" mean, and how much signal does this cable actually lose?
All coax loses some signal as heat over distance — "low loss" means less loss than a standard-grade cable of the same size. Manufacturer test data for this cable shows attenuation of 20.5dB per 100 metres at 200MHz, rising to 26.3dB per 100 metres at 400MHz. For a typical antenna lead a few metres long, that loss is small.

Q: Is this suitable for UHF CB radio?
Yes. Australian UHF CB runs on the 476-477MHz band, and this cable's 50Ω impedance and low-loss construction are exactly what UHF CB antenna feedlines are built to.

Q: What connectors work with this cable?
It's sized for standard RG58 connectors — PL259, BNC, FME and TNC are all commonly used, matched to whichever connector your radio and antenna take.

Q: Does this cable come with connectors fitted?
No — it's sold as bare cable so you can cut it to length first. Connectors are crimped or soldered on afterwards to suit your radio and antenna, and are sold separately.

Q: Can I order this in a continuous roll?
Yes — it's cut to length per metre and supplied as one unbroken run unless you ask for it cut into separate pieces.

Q: Does running this cable near power wiring affect the signal?
Keep it away from power cables and sharp edges where practical. The cable is shielded, but routing it hard against a noisy power feed (inverter, DC-DC charger) can still introduce interference, and abrasion against sharp edges over time can damage the shield and reduce performance.

Q: Does cable length affect how well my radio performs?
Yes — longer runs lose more signal. Keep the run as short and direct as practical between the radio and antenna. A few extra metres on a low-loss cable like this makes little difference, but doubling or tripling the length starts to add up.

Q: What's the difference between the foil-plus-braid shield on this cable and a basic single-braid cable?
This cable uses a double shield — an aluminium foil layer plus a tinned copper braid over it — rather than a single braid layer. The extra shield layer gives better rejection of outside interference and a more consistent signal along the run than a basic single-braid cable.
