An illuminated momentary rocker switch that drives a winch's spool-in and spool-out solenoids from a single lever. Flip up for spool-in, flip down for spool-out, release for stop; the switch spring-returns to centre-off both ways so the winch never runs unattended. Fits any 4WD, ute, truck or trailer with a Carling-format 37 × 21mm switch cutout in the dash or centre console.

The blue backlight makes the winch icon visible on a dark dashboard. Body clips through the 37.5 × 21mm cutout without screws. Five blade terminals on the rear cover the SPDT momentary contact pair plus the illumination lead and earth. Sealed against splash and dust for cabin-mount installs.

Wire the 20A contacts to the winch solenoid coils, not the winch motor feeds directly. Winch motors draw 200 to 500 amps under load and would destroy the switch contacts in one flip; the solenoid coil draws under 500mA, which the 20A rating handles easily. Fuse the switched feed at the source, not at the switch.

Q: What does momentary mean on this switch?
Momentary means the switch is only closed while you're holding it. Let go and it spring-returns to the centre-off position both ways. Winches use momentary switches because a stuck-on winch is dangerous, a hand caught in the line has no way to stop the pull.

Q: What's the difference between momentary and latching?
A latching switch stays where you put it (like a light switch). A momentary switch snaps back to off when released. Winches, air horns, starter buttons and reset lines use momentary. Cabin lights, work lights and fridges use latching.

Q: Can I wire the winch motor directly through this?
No. Winch motors draw 200 to 500 amps under load, and this switch is rated to 20A. Wire the switch to the winch solenoid coils (which draw under 500mA to trigger), and let the solenoids handle the heavy motor current.

Q: How many terminals does it use and what are they for?
Five terminals: two for the SPDT momentary switch (one common plus two output), one for the illumination LED positive, one for the LED earth, and one common ground. The exact wiring diagram varies by winch brand, check the winch's solenoid box for the trigger inputs.

Q: What cutout does it fit?
37.5mm wide by 21mm tall, the Carling C-Series contura footprint used by ARB, Redarc, Blue Sea and most 4WD switch panels. Any panel built for a standard Carling rocker will accept this switch without modification.

Q: Is it waterproof?
Sealed against splash and dust for cabin-mount installs (open dashboard, marine helm, centre console). Not immersion-rated. Don't mount it exposed on a bull-bar or engine bay where it sees direct high-pressure water or long-term rain exposure.

Q: Will it work on a 24V system?
Rated at 12V and 24V compatible with the 20A ceiling holding at 12V; derate the current to around 10A per throw on 24V for contact life. Blue backlight LED will run brighter on 24V, so add a resistor if you want to preserve LED life.

Q: What if I want a latching winch switch instead?
Don't. A latching winch switch that stays on if you release the button is a safety hazard, if the winch line snags, hooks a hand, or the vehicle rolls, there's no automatic stop. Every commercial winch installation uses momentary controls for exactly this reason.
