A pair of anodised aluminium rails that bolt a solar panel to the roof of a 4WD, caravan, camper trailer or boat with an air gap underneath. Each rail is 800mm long, 50mm wide and 42mm deep with pre-drilled mounting holes along the length. Fits solar panels with a side profile around 28 to 42mm.

Both rails are a single-piece anodised aluminium extrusion that holds up to salt air, rain, UV and road grime. The hollow profile keeps the pair at 0.73 kg without giving up stiffness. Cut either rail shorter with a hacksaw if the panel or the roof length won't take the full 800mm.

The rails lift the panel 42mm off the roof so air flows underneath, which keeps the panel cooler and lets water drain through. Mounting bolts for both the rails and the panel are not included; pick stainless steel M6 or M8 to suit the roof thickness and the panel's own mounting slots.

  • Hollow extrusion — strong without adding roof weight
  • Anodised finish — resists salt, UV and road grime
  • Pre-drilled holes — bolt straight through without re-marking
  • Cuttable length — trim with a hacksaw to fit the roof
  • 42mm standoff — air flows under the panel to keep it cool
  • Water drainage — rain and dew clear through the gap
  • Twin-pack — enough for a single standard-size panel
  • Mounts on most roofs — steel, alloy, fibreglass or composite

twin-pack anodised aluminium mounting rails for solar panels
Suits solar panels with a 28 to 42mm side profile
Fits 4WD roof racks, caravan rooftops, camper trailer roofs, boat decks and canopies
Works on steel, aluminium, fibreglass and composite roof surfaces
Not suitable for solar panels with a side profile under 28mm (use the Small profile rail instead)
Mounting bolts for both rails and panel are not included

Q: What does a solar panel mounting rail actually do?
It raises the solar panel off the roof surface, so air can flow underneath for cooling and so water can drain away. Without a gap, panels overheat and shed output, and water pools under the frame.

Q: How do I know if my panel will fit these rails?
Check the side profile depth of the panel's own frame. These Large rails suit panels with a 28 to 42mm side profile. Panels thinner than that need the Small profile rail.

Q: Can I cut the rails shorter?
Yes. A hacksaw or angle grinder gives a clean cut through the aluminium. File or sand the cut edge smooth. Lay the panel against the rail, mark the length needed, cut and re-drill if the mount position changes.

Q: Why not bolt the panel straight to the roof?
Flat-mounting kills airflow and the panel heats up, which drops the daily watt-hour output. A 42mm gap under the rails lets wind pass through, keeps the panel 10 to 15 degrees cooler in summer and lets rain and condensation drain off the roof.

Q: Does the pack include mounting bolts?
No. The rails come as a pair, pre-drilled. Pick bolts to match the roof surface and the panel's own mounting slots.

Q: What size bolts should I use?
M6 or M8 stainless steel pan-head or button-head for the panel-to-rail bolts. For the rail-to-roof, match the fastener to the roof thickness: self-tapping screws into fibreglass or alloy, through-bolts with backing plate into a steel sheet. Use stainless so the fasteners don't corrode and stain the finish.

Q: Will the anodised finish last outside?
Yes. Natural anodising hardens the aluminium surface against salt, UV, rain and road grime. Expect a decade or more of exterior life on a vehicle roof. Avoid scratching through the finish, as bare aluminium will oxidise.

Q: Can I use these on a fibreglass caravan roof?
Yes. Through-bolt with a backing washer or plate on the inside of the roof skin to spread the load. Seal around the bolt heads with a flexible roof sealant (Sikaflex 221 or equivalent) to keep water out.

Q: Are these the Small or Large profile?
These are the Large profile rails with a 50mm by 42mm cross-section, suited to panels with a 28 to 42mm side profile. A Small profile rail with a 40mm by 32mm cross-section is also in our range for thinner panels (17 to 25mm side profile).

Q: Can I paint the rails a different colour?
Yes. Scuff the anodised finish with 240-grit abrasive, wipe with isopropyl alcohol, prime with an etching primer suited to aluminium, then topcoat with automotive 2K or enamel. For a factory-matched black finish, a pre-anodised black rail is also in our range.
