An 80-watt plug-in soldering iron that heats to about 480°C on 240V mains. Covers automotive wiring repairs: joining 14 to 22 AWG cable, re-tinning spade terminals, fixing trailer plugs, battery monitor leads and splice sleeves. Fits a workshop bench, a toolbox or a mobile 240V setup.

The stainless steel barrel takes four interchangeable tips, so one iron covers fine point work for electronics and a chisel face for bigger wires. The anti-roll handle keeps the tip clear of the bench when the iron rests between joins, and the insulation around the heating section stops a hot barrel touching skin or bench edges. A wire-coil stand parks the iron safely between joins.

At 80W fixed, this is a general-purpose iron, not a temperature-controlled station. Battery lugs in 00 B&S or 2 B&S need a 150W-plus iron or a torch kit. Fine PCB electronics work runs cooler at 25 to 40W, so use a smaller iron or a temperature-controlled station for that.

Pairs with

  • 80W power — handles automotive wire gauges 14 to 22 AWG
  • 240V mains — AU/NZ 3-pin plug, no battery or gas required
  • Four tips included — fine point to chisel face, swap per job
  • Stainless steel barrel — resists corrosion and tip blueing
  • Anti-roll handle — iron stays put on the bench between joins
  • Screw-lock tip fitting — tips stay seated under heat and pressure
  • Bench stand included — safe parking spot for the hot iron

240V mains plug-in soldering iron for automotive wiring work
Automotive wire 14 to 22 AWG (0.5mm² to 2.5mm²), spade terminals, trailer plugs, splice sleeves
Workshop bench, mobile 240V jobsite, hobbyist shed
Not for 00 B&S or 2 B&S battery lugs — use a 150W iron or torch kit

Q: What does 80 watts actually mean for a soldering iron?
Wattage is the heating power of the element. More watts means faster recovery when the tip touches cold metal and more thermal mass to work bigger joints. 80W sits in the sweet spot for automotive wiring: hot enough to tin 14 AWG spade terminals and splice sleeves quickly, not so hot it blues the tip in a few hours of lighter work.

Q: What size wires can this handle?
Comfortably 14 to 22 AWG (0.5mm² to 2.5mm²) solid or stranded automotive cable, plus trailer-plug pins and spade terminals. For 8 AWG and heavier (DC-DC output cables, inverter feeds, battery lugs in 00 B&S or 2 B&S) step up to a 150W iron or use a torch with silver solder.

Q: Does it have adjustable temperature control?
No. This is a fixed-power 80W iron that runs at a single tip temperature of about 480°C once warm. For temperature-controlled electronics work (PCB rework, lead-free solder requiring precise control, SMD repairs) a soldering station is the right tool.

Q: What is in the box?
The 80W iron, four interchangeable tips (one fine point and three chisel/bevel shapes for different joint sizes), and a wire-coil bench stand that keeps the hot tip clear of the bench surface. Solder is sold separately.

Q: Do I need a licensed electrician to use it?
No. It plugs into a standard AU/NZ 240V 3-pin wall socket like any mains-powered hand tool, RCM-marked for AU/NZ sale as a Class I plug-in appliance. Fixed-wiring work on 240V (new power circuits, wall outlets) is the part that needs a licensed sparky; plugging in a tool is not.

Q: How long does it take to heat up?
About 3 to 5 minutes from cold to full tip temperature. Leave the iron on its stand once hot and switch it off when the job is done. Repeated heat-cool cycles shorten tip life faster than leaving it running for the session.

Q: Can I use it with lead-free solder?
Yes. 80W is enough thermal mass to melt lead-free solder (which has a higher melting point than tin-lead), though lead-free wets slightly slower and oxidises the tip faster. Keep the tip tinned with a dab of solder before setting the iron down and wipe on a damp sponge or brass-coil cleaner between joins.

Q: Are replacement tips available?
Yes. The tips use a screw-lock pattern common to AU-market 80W irons. Ask us for a replacement tip pack to suit, or check your local electronics store (Jaycar TS1486 and equivalent tips in the same format are interchangeable).

Q: Do I still need flux if the solder is resin-core?
Resin-core solder has flux built into the wire, enough for clean copper wire and freshly tinned terminals. For older or oxidised wire, dirty connectors or tarnished battery posts, add a dab of paste flux first so the solder flows and bonds instead of beading.

Q: What safety gear should I have on hand?
Safety glasses (molten solder can spit), a leather or nitrile glove on the hand holding the work, and ventilation or a small fume fan since solder fumes carry flux residue. A silicone solder mat or a scrap piece of hardboard protects the bench from burns and dropped solder.
