A plug-in adaptor that lets a vehicle fitted with a 7-pin small round trailer socket run a trailer fitted with a 7-pin flat plug. Fits caravans, box trailers, boat trailers and horse floats towed behind older 4WDs, utes, vans and SUVs still wired for the small round connector.

The housing is moulded plastic with brass pin contacts for low voltage drop at the joint. It plugs straight between the vehicle socket and the trailer plug with no cutting, splicing or wiring changes. Each pole is rated 15A at 12V, enough for standard trailer tail, stop, indicator and reverse lighting, plus the earth and auxiliary pin.

Pin ratings cover standard trailer lighting but not electric brakes or heavy accessory draws routed through the same pins. For a trailer running electric brakes or a dedicated reverse-camera feed, hard-wire a dedicated circuit rather than relying on the adaptor pass-through.

Trailer wiring adaptor between older small round vehicle socket and modern flat trailer plug
Suits older 4WDs, utes, vans and SUVs fitted with the small round 7-pin socket
Not compatible with large round, 12-pin flat or 13-pin euro trailer plugs; use the matching adaptor

Q: What does '7-pin small round' actually mean?
A: It's the smaller of the two 7-pin round trailer connectors. The pins sit in a round face about 35mm across, versus the 'large round' style at about 50mm across. The small round pattern was common on Australian passenger cars and 4WDs through the 1970s-90s before the flat 7-pin became the local standard.

Q: Why would my vehicle have the small round socket and my trailer have the flat plug?
A: Older vehicles were wired with the small round socket at the factory. Trailers built in the last two decades use the flat 7-pin as the Australian standard. This adaptor bridges the two so an older tow vehicle still works with a modern trailer.

Q: Does this handle electric brakes?
A: No. The 7-pin small round pattern does not carry a dedicated brake-controller circuit, and this adaptor only passes through the standard lighting pins. For a trailer with electric brakes, run a separate brake-controller wire direct to the tow vehicle's brake-controller output.

Q: Will it fit a 12-pin or 13-pin trailer?
A: No. The adaptor only converts between a 7-pin small round socket and a 7-pin flat plug. For a 12-pin flat or 13-pin euro trailer, use the matching dedicated adaptor for that connector pattern.

Q: How much current can each pin carry?
A: Each pin is rated 15A at 12V, which covers all standard trailer lighting loads (stop, tail, indicator, reverse, number-plate). Avoid routing a high-current accessory load through the lighting pins.

Q: Does the adaptor need to be fused separately?
A: Fuse the vehicle side at the fuse box as normal; the adaptor is a passive pass-through and does not add or require its own fuse. If the vehicle-side circuit is already fused appropriately for 7-pin lighting loads, nothing extra is needed.

Q: Is the adaptor weatherproof?
A: The housing and both connector shells are moulded plastic with a short flexible conduit between the two ends; the face connectors seal into their mating half when plugged in. Standard automotive weather protection, suited to road spray and rain. Not rated for continuous submersion.

Q: Can I leave it plugged in all the time?
A: Yes, if the plug and socket are protected from direct water ingress when parked. Many owners leave the adaptor permanently fitted to the trailer plug so the trailer always presents the vehicle-matching small round plug.

Q: What vehicles usually have the small round socket?
A: Older Toyota LandCruiser 60/70/80 Series, older Nissan Patrol GQ/GU, older Land Rover Defender and Discovery, early Ford Falcon utes with the factory tow pack, and various 1980s-90s Holden commercials. If unsure, measure the round face: around 35mm diameter is small round, around 50mm is large round.

Q: Do I need the 'flat socket to small round plug' version instead?
A: Only if the fitment is reversed, with the vehicle side carrying the flat socket and the trailer carrying the small round plug. For the common case of an older vehicle with a small round socket wanting to tow a modern trailer with a flat plug, this is the correct adaptor.
