A five-metre pre-terminated Cat6 patch lead that runs Gigabit Ethernet between a router, switch, patch panel, PC, NAS or wall outlet. Plugs straight in on both ends with moulded RJ45 connectors, no crimp tool or termination step required. Fits home, office and workshop network runs, plus mobile-workshop, camper and 4WD comms setups where the router sits away from the device.

24 AWG bare copper conductors sit under a PVC outer jacket, wired to the T568B standard. Both plugs carry moulded strain relief so the crimp joint does not fatigue when the lead is flexed at the connector. Backward compatible with Cat5e ports, so it drops into an older switch without changing pinout.

Cat6 is rated to run Gigabit Ethernet over the TIA-568 100m channel length; a five-metre lead sits well inside that budget. UTP jacket (unshielded) is the standard pick for home, office and workshop runs. If the lead has to run alongside a 240V mains circuit or a heavy machinery loom, step up to a shielded (S/FTP) equivalent instead.

Cat6 patch cord length guide

Cat6 patch leads in our range. Pick the length that reaches without leaving excess slack in the run:

Length Best for
1m Patch panel to switch, adjacent equipment
2m Desk to wall outlet, short runs
5m (this one) Router or switch to a device across a room

Need a different length?

  • Cat6 rated — Gigabit Ethernet ready
  • 24 AWG copper — low-loss bare-copper conductor
  • T568B wiring — industry-standard pinout
  • Moulded RJ45 — plug and play both ends
  • PVC jacket — durable outer sheath
  • UTP unshielded — standard indoor pick

Q: What length is this patch cord, and do you have other lengths?
A: This one is 5 metres. We also sell 1m and 2m versions if you need a shorter lead. Pick the length that reaches without leaving excess slack in the run.

Q: What connectors does it have?
A: RJ45 on both ends, wired to the T568B standard. Plugs straight into any standard Ethernet port on a router, switch, patch panel, PC or NAS.

Q: What does 'Cat6' actually mean, and do I need it over Cat5e?
A: Cat6 is a cabling standard (ANSI/TIA-568-C.2) with tighter twist rates and better isolation between wire pairs than Cat5e, so it handles Gigabit Ethernet more reliably over longer runs and has headroom for faster speeds on shorter cables. For a modem-to-router hop a metre apart, Cat5e is fine; Cat6 earns its keep on longer runs, near electrically noisy equipment, or if you want headroom for a future upgrade.

Q: Is this cable shielded?
A: No, this is UTP (unshielded twisted pair), the standard choice for home, office and workshop runs. If the lead runs alongside high-voltage wiring or heavy machinery, a shielded (S/FTP) equivalent handles interference better.

Q: How far can a Cat6 UTP run before the signal drops?
A: The TIA-568 channel limit for Cat6 is 100 metres end to end, which includes patch leads at both ends plus the horizontal cable in the wall. A five-metre patch sits well inside that budget. Longer runs benefit from a solid-core Cat6 backbone with patch cords doing only the last leg at each end.

Q: T568A vs T568B, does the wiring standard matter?
A: Both wire the same eight conductors to the same eight pins, in a different colour order. What matters is that both ends of a straight-through cable use the same standard. T568B is the more common commercial default in Australia and North America; T568A is often used in residential and government installs. Either works for Gigabit as long as it is consistent end to end.

Q: Can I run Power over Ethernet (PoE) through this cable?
A: Yes. Cat6 UTP handles PoE (up to 15W), PoE+ (up to 30W) and PoE++ (60 to 90W depending on class). 24 AWG copper carries the DC current comfortably at these power levels over normal patch-cord lengths. Confirm the powered device and the source switch both agree on the PoE class before plugging in.

Q: Cat6 vs Cat6a vs Cat7, which do I actually need?
A: Cat6 handles Gigabit Ethernet up to 100m and 10-Gigabit up to about 55m. Cat6a extends 10-Gigabit to the full 100m. Cat7 adds full shielding for very high-interference environments. For a home, office, workshop or vehicle-based comms setup running Gigabit or below, Cat6 UTP is the right pick; go Cat6a only if you are wiring in 10G today or the client's spec calls for it.
