A high-cranking AGM battery for cruisers, large touring bikes, ATVs and powersport vehicles that specify a YTX20HL-BS. Delivers 310 cold cranking amps and 18Ah of reserve capacity on a sealed 12V VRLA cell stack. Fits Yamaha Grizzly 660/700 ATVs, Yamaha V-Max cruisers, Kawasaki Mule side-by-sides and large V-twin cruisers that run a dry-charged YTX20HL-BS from the factory.

The case is 175 by 87 by 155mm with Terminal A SAE posts, positive on the left. Lead calcium cast-grid plates sit between glass-fibre mats that hold the acid in place for upright or multi-angle mounting. The battery ships dry-charged, so a Century acid pack fills and activates it on first install and seals permanently once charged.

Replace by the SKU on the old battery, not by brand. YTX20HL-BS has a different height and polarity to YTX20L-BS or YTX20CH-BS, and the harness won't line up if the wrong one goes in. Charge it fully before first use and keep a smart charger on it during long storage, which is what kills AGM cells faster than running them.

  • High cranking amps — 310CCA for big V-twins and ATVs
  • 18Ah capacity — long reserve for accessories and GPS
  • AGM VRLA sealed — spill-proof, multi-angle mounting
  • Lead calcium plates — slower self-discharge during storage
  • Dry-charged shipping — long shelf life before activation
  • Vibration resistant — holds up on off-road ATV use
  • Smart-charger ready — pairs with Century CC6121.2

Electrical

Voltage: 12V DC

CCA: 310A

Capacity: 18Ah

Build

Chemistry: AGM VRLA

Terminal: Type A SAE

Technology: Lead calcium

Activation: Dry-charged

Length: 175mm

Width: 87mm

Height: 155mm

Weight: 5.96kg

Activation (dry-charged):

The Century acid pack ships with the battery and activates it on first install. Fill each cell to the upper mark, let it stand for 30 minutes while the plates absorb the acid, then charge at around 1.8A for 5-10 hours on a smart charger before fitting. The battery seals permanently once activated and is spill-proof after that.

Install:

Mount with the positive terminal to the left (Terminal A SAE layout, L designation). Torque the terminal bolts to 4-5 Nm; overtightening cracks the lead post. Secure the battery in the tray with the OEM strap or clamp; AGM cells don't like vibration from loose mounting.

Charging:

Use a smart charger like the Century CC6121.2 for recharging. A conventional trickle charger left on constantly cooks AGM cells; only use trickle charging for short top-ups, not long storage. For storage over 4 weeks, a smart maintainer keeps the battery healthy.

Q: What does CCA actually mean?
Cold cranking amps — how much current the battery can push for 30 seconds at -18°C without the voltage collapsing. 310CCA is enough to spin a 1800cc V-twin cruiser or a Yamaha Grizzly ATV engine over on a cold winter morning.

Q: What does AGM mean?
Absorbed Glass Mat. The sulfuric acid is held in glass-fibre mats between the plates instead of sloshing around as liquid. Spill-proof, sealed, and safe to mount on its side without leaking.

Q: What's VRLA?
Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid. A sealed battery with a one-way pressure valve that vents gas safely during charging. The battery never needs water topping-up because the gas recombines inside the case.

Q: What does the YTX20HL-BS code mean?
It's a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) code. Y is powersports, T is sealed maintenance-free, X is extra-high performance, 20 is the size class, H is extra height, L is positive terminal on the left of the SAE post pair, BS is sold with acid bottle (dry-charged).

Q: What's the difference between YTX20HL-BS and YTX20L-BS?
Same footprint but the HL version is taller (155mm vs 130mm) and higher cranking output. Check the old battery's label; swapping the wrong one in means the terminals don't line up with the harness or the lid won't close.

Q: Dry-charged vs factory-activated, what's the difference?
Dry-charged batteries ship empty and come with an acid pack to fill on first install. Factory-activated ones ship already filled and sealed. The YTX20HL-BS is dry-charged, so it has a longer shelf life in the box but needs 30 minutes of filling plus 5-10 hours of smart charging before first use.

Q: Can I use a higher-CCA replacement?
Yes, more CCA than the OEM spec is always safe. The starter draws what it needs. Going lower on CCA is the real problem; a cold engine won't crank fast enough and the starter solenoid chatters.

Q: How do I activate a dry-charged battery?
Fill each cell with the supplied acid pack to the upper line, let it stand for 30 minutes while the plates absorb the acid, then charge it on a smart charger at around 1.8A for 5-10 hours. Pop the fill caps closed permanently once it's charged; it's sealed from that point on.

Q: Can I install it on its side?
Yes. The AGM glass-mat design holds the acid in place at any angle except fully upside down. Check the bike's manual; some models require upright mounting for ventilation clearance even though the battery itself doesn't care.

Q: How long should it last?
AGM powersports batteries typically run 3-5 years in regular use. Long storage without a smart charger kills them fastest; a battery left dead flat for a month sulphates and never fully recovers.
