A 70A DC-DC charger that puts up to 1000W into an auxiliary 12V battery from the vehicle's alternator. Handles smart alternators and runs eight preset charge profiles for lithium, AGM, gel and lead-acid batteries. Fits 4WD builds, caravans, canopy fit-outs and marine installs where space is tight and the charge needs to be fast.

Measures 137 by 123 by 40mm and weighs 340g, so it tucks into cramped under-bonnet or seat-base cavities most 50A units will not fit. Screw terminals accept cable up to 25mm² (4 AWG) on both the input and output side. Twin internal fans and an aluminium heat-sink plate hold the full 70A output steady to 40°C ambient, then derate 1.5% per degree above.

Pairs with the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth to set output voltage from 10 to 17V, cap current between 1A and 70A, select the charge profile and read live stats. Multiple units can run in parallel for larger banks when a single 70A charger cannot keep up.

Mount on a flat vertical surface with at least 100mm of clear airflow above and below. The twin fans draw air across the heat-sink plate from one side to the other; blocking airflow drops the sustained output. Under-bonnet, seat-base and canopy locations all work.

Run 25mm² (4 AWG) cable from the start battery to the input terminals and the same gauge from the output terminals to the auxiliary battery. Keep each cable run under 2 metres per side where possible. Fit an 80A MIDI fuse on the input cable within 300mm of the start battery positive terminal.

Use VictronConnect on a phone to pick the charge profile for the auxiliary battery chemistry, set the output voltage limits per the battery maker's spec sheet, and cap the current if the battery accepts less than 70A. Save the profile. The charger then runs the full programmed profile every time the engine starts, no further setup needed.

For integration with a Victron GX device (Cerbo, Ekrano), add a VE.Direct cable from the Orion XS to any spare VE.Direct port. Firmware v1.03+ and Venus OS v3.20+ required for DVCC.

Q: What does DC-DC charger actually mean?
A DC-DC charger steps the vehicle alternator's 12V output up to the voltage an auxiliary battery needs to charge cleanly. A plain voltage-sensing relay just connects the two batteries straight through, which does not suit modern smart alternators or lithium batteries. The DC-DC charger isolates and conditions the charge so it runs at the right profile for the battery chemistry.

Q: What does smart-alternator compatible mean?
Modern vehicles vary alternator output based on engine load and fuel economy. The alternator can drop under 13V while cruising, which will not charge a lithium or AGM auxiliary properly. A smart-alternator-ready DC-DC charger boosts that variable voltage up to the full charge voltage the auxiliary battery needs.

Q: Does this need an ignition wire?
No. The Orion XS senses when the engine is running by monitoring the input voltage, so there is no second wire to run back to a switched ignition source.

Q: How much faster is 70A than 40A?
Roughly 75% faster. A 100Ah lithium bank from 50% to full on a 40A charger takes about an hour and a quarter of driving. The same bank on the Orion XS 70A finishes in about 45 minutes.

Q: Can I charge lithium batteries with this?
Yes. VictronConnect over Bluetooth lets you pick the lithium (LiFePO4) profile from eight presets, or set a user-defined profile with your battery maker's exact bulk, absorption and float voltages.

Q: Can I run two Orion XS units in parallel?
Yes. Multiple units can be wired in parallel to a single battery bank for more output. Each unit has its own 25mm² (4 AWG) input and output terminals.

Q: Does the Orion XS take solar input?
No. The Orion XS is a vehicle-alternator DC-DC charger. For solar input into the same battery, pair it with a Victron MPPT charge controller on its own circuit. The two work together on the same bank.

Q: How is this different from the Victron Orion-Tr Smart?
The Orion-Tr Smart is the older, larger range. The Orion XS is roughly 40% smaller, 30% lighter and runs higher efficiency (98.5% vs around 87%). Both are configured from VictronConnect and both handle lithium, AGM, gel and lead-acid chemistries.

Q: What size input fuse do I need?
An 80A MIDI fuse on the input cable, within 300mm of the start battery. The 70A output draws roughly 80A on the input side at full output, allowing for efficiency losses and startup transients.

Q: Is the Orion XS waterproof?
The power electronics sit inside an IP65 housing, so splash and dust will not reach the circuitry. The outer casing is IP20, so avoid mounting in standing water or spots that collect rain. Under-bonnet, canopy and seat-base locations all work.

Q: Is a VE.Direct cable included?
No. The VE.Direct cable is sold separately. You only need one if you are connecting to a Victron GX device like a Cerbo for whole-system monitoring. For phone-based setup via Bluetooth, no cable is required.

Q: What warranty does Victron offer?
Victron Energy covers the Orion XS for 5 years from the date of purchase against manufacturing defects.
