A compact 50A DC-DC battery charger from Victron for charging a 12V auxiliary battery off a 12V alternator. Non-isolated model, so the input and output batteries share a common DC negative. Fits dual-battery 4WDs and utes, caravans and camper vans with smart alternators, marine installs on boats with Euro 5 or Euro 6 alternators, and off-grid 12V rigs.

Compact and light at 50 by 145 by 130mm and 450g, so it slips in behind the dash or under a seat. Bluetooth Smart is built in for the VictronConnect app, with 8 pre-programmed battery profiles and a fully configurable adaptive charge algorithm. VE.Direct port for a wired connection to a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX. Remote on/off terminal for a BMS or manual switch. Multiple units can run in parallel for higher output.

What sets it apart

  • 50A at 12V output — 700W, enough to keep a 100 to 200Ah bank topped up.
  • Smart alternator ready — engine shutdown detection activates charging only when the alternator supplies power.
  • Bluetooth Smart — settings, monitoring and firmware over VictronConnect; Instant Readout at the device list.
  • 8 battery profiles — adaptive 4-stage algorithm plus fully configurable per chemistry.
  • VE.Direct + remote on/off — GX networking, Vsense/Tsense/Isense via VE.Smart, BMS integration.
  • Parallel capable — run multiple units together when more current is needed.
  • Compact 450g — slips in behind the dash or under a seat; non-isolated topology keeps size down.

⚠ Non-isolated topology: input and output share a common DC negative. On vehicles where the start and house batteries are not already bonded to a common chassis ground, use an isolated DC-DC charger instead. Ask us if you're unsure.

Pair with Elevate's house batteries and workshop fitting:

  • 50A at 12V — 700W output, sized for a 100 to 200Ah bank
  • Smart alternator ready — engine shutdown detection, no ignition trigger needed
  • Bluetooth Smart — VictronConnect app settings and monitoring
  • 8 battery profiles — adaptive 4-stage, plus custom per chemistry
  • VE.Direct port — wired link to Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX
  • Parallel capable — multiple units together for higher current
  • Compact 450g — fits behind the dash or under a seat

Mounting location

  • IP22 rated, so mount in the cabin, canopy, under seat or on a protected bulkhead. Not for direct engine-bay or wheel-well mounting.
  • Keep it the right way up for drip protection, and allow airflow around the heatsink for cooling.
  • Compact at 50 x 145 x 130mm; fits behind the dash or under a seat on most builds.

Wiring & terminals

  • Non-isolated: input and output share a common DC negative.
  • 6 B&S cable to the start battery covers most 50A installs; step up on long runs.
  • Fit in-line fuses at both ends: close to the start battery on the alternator input, and close to the house battery on the output.
  • Remote on/off terminal accepts a BMS signal or manual switch.

Configuration

  • Set the battery profile from VictronConnect over Bluetooth.
  • On smart-alternator vehicles, engine shutdown detection activates charging only when the alternator supplies power. No ignition trigger wire required.
  • Add a VE.Direct cable to a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX for VRM monitoring and DVCC.
  • Firmware updates over Bluetooth through VictronConnect.

Full fitting steps and wiring diagrams are in the Victron Orion XS manual, downloadable from this page.

Do not

install non-isolated between a start battery and a house battery that must stay galvanically separated. Use an isolated DC-DC charger instead.

12V battery systems with a smart or standard alternator. Non-isolated installs where the input and output batteries share a common DC negative.
Dual-battery 4WDs, utes, caravans and camper vans
Marine installs on boats with Euro 5 or Euro 6 smart alternators
Off-grid 12V setups needing a controllable DC-DC
24V input vehicles, use a 24V-input DC-DC charger instead
Fully isolated installs where input and output negatives must be separate

Q: What does DC-DC actually mean?
Direct Current to Direct Current converter. Your vehicle's alternator puts out a variable voltage (12.6V to 15V+, and smart alternators often drop below 13V for fuel-saving). A DC-DC takes that messy input and produces a stable, correct charge profile for the auxiliary battery, whether it's AGM, gel or lithium.

Q: Why do I need one on a modern vehicle?
Smart alternators on Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles cut voltage to save fuel, and long cable runs on boats and RVs cause voltage drop. The Orion XS boosts whatever comes in up to a correct charge voltage for the service battery, so a lithium bank actually gets full charge.

Q: What does non-isolated mean, and does it matter?
Input and output share a common DC negative. On most vehicles the start and house batteries are already bonded to the chassis, so non-isolated is the right fit and keeps size down. If your install needs the input and output negatives genuinely separated (certain marine installs, some caravan tow setups), use an isolated DC-DC charger instead.

Q: Does it work with lithium batteries?
Yes. Pick the Li-ion profile in VictronConnect, or build your own custom profile. Low-temperature cut-off is built in to protect LiFePO4 cells from charging below 0 degrees Celsius.

Q: What is VE.Direct and do I need a GX device?
VE.Direct is Victron's wired data port. You don't need a GX device for the charger to work, but if you add a Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX or similar, you get full remote monitoring on VRM, DVCC (Vsense, Tsense, Isense) and system-wide charge current limits.

Q: What is Bluetooth Smart used for here?
Settings and monitoring from the VictronConnect app on a phone or tablet. Instant Readout shows the key figures without opening the product. Firmware updates run over Bluetooth too.

Q: Can I run multiple Orion XS units in parallel?
Yes. Multiple units can run in parallel for higher current. Common pattern is two 50A units for a 100A charge rate on a bigger bank, each with its own input cable.

Q: What is the ingress rating?
IP22. The product is dust-protected and splash-resistant from vertical drips, so it mounts well inside the cabin, canopy or under seat. Not rated for engine-bay firewall mounting without a splash shield.

Q: What cable size to the start battery?
6 B&S in our workshop's experience covers most 50A installs. Step up on long cable runs. Fit an in-line fuse close to the start battery on the alternator input.

Q: What's included in the box?
Orion XS 12/12-50A unit plus quick installation guide. Cables, fuses and mounting bracket are specified to your build; our workshop can supply or install them.

Q: Where should it be mounted?
In the cabin, canopy or under the seat. IP22 is not rated for direct engine-bay or wheel-well mounting. Allow airflow around the fins for cooling and keep it the right way up for drip protection.

Q: How long is the warranty?
5 years, direct from Victron Energy.
