ACTIVE-BALANCING BMS

Heltech BMS balances cells continuously — not just at top-of-charge. Cell-level voltage, current, temperature and short-circuit protection

An ultra-slim LiFePO4 auxiliary battery built to fit where a standard-format lithium or AGM won't — behind seats, inside drawer systems, under canopy floors and in camper compartments with as little as 76mm of clearance. 230Ah of usable capacity in a 71mm-slim core body, so you keep the runtime of a full-size lithium in the footprint of a slim.

Custom Lithium designs and builds it in Brisbane, and backs it with a 7-year warranty. A-grade automotive-spec LiFePO4 prismatic cells, IEC 62619 certified, protected by a Heltech BMS with an active cell balancer that works while the pack is charging, discharging or resting.

What sets it apart

  • 71mm ultra-slim profile — 610 × 405 × 71mm core body (645 × 475 × 76mm overall with side rails). Fits mounting spaces a standard slim lithium won't clear.
  • 330A continuous, 1060A peak discharge — runs 3000W inverters, induction cooktops and high-current 12V accessories without hitting the BMS ceiling. 1600A short-circuit protection.
  • 100A recommended charge, 240A peak — fast recharge from a lithium-profile DC-DC or a high-output solar controller.
  • M10 stainless terminals with side rails, bolts and covers included — ready to mount and terminate out of the carton.
  • Heltech BMS with active balancer — cell-level over/under voltage, over-current, over-temperature and short-circuit protection. Balancer runs continuously, not just at top-of-charge.

⚠ Do not: connect this battery directly to a variable-voltage alternator — it will damage the alternator, the battery or both. Alternator charging must go through a lithium-compatible DC-DC charger. Solar can feed the DC-DC's solar input or run through a separate MPPT.

These are the DC-DC chargers we pair with it — sold separately.

  • 230Ah capacity — in a 71mm-slim body
  • 330A continuous — 1060A peak discharge, 1600A short-circuit protection
  • A-grade LiFePO4 — IEC 62619 certified prismatic cells
  • Heltech BMS — with active cell balancer
  • 240A peak charge — 100A recommended, suits any lithium-profile DC-DC
  • M10 terminals — rails, bolts and covers included
  • 0°C to 60°C — BMS blocks charging below 0°C
  • Made in Brisbane — 7-year Custom Lithium warranty

Lithium-compatible DC-DC chargerrequired to charge from the alternator. Sold separately:
Battery cable, lugs and fusessized to your continuous load, sold separately. 50mm² minimum for most auxiliary setupsSold separately

Mounting the battery

  • Bolt the mounting side rails to a flat, load-bearing surface in a cabin, canopy, drawer or camper compartment. Not for engine-bay installation.
  • When mounting along a canopy base or vehicle floor, position the battery without the bottom rail so it sits directly on the floor — manufacturer's guidance for best weight support.
  • Overall footprint including rails and terminals is 645 × 475 × 76 mm. Check clearance before you install.

Wiring

  • Use battery cable sized to your continuous load — 50mm² minimum for most auxiliary setups; step up for longer runs or high-current inverters.
  • Fit fuses to both positive leads within 300mm of the battery terminal.
  • M10 terminals. Torque figure is not published by the manufacturer — hand-tighten with a spanner, do not over-torque.

Charging

  • Use a lithium-compatible DC-DC charger between the alternator and this battery. Direct alternator connection is not supported.
  • Charge voltage 14.2V – 14.6V, absorption / float 13.4V – 13.6V. Any lithium-profile DC-DC or AC charger set to LiFePO4 will do the job.
  • Solar via a lithium-profile MPPT. Charging below 0°C is blocked by the BMS to protect the cells.
Do not

Do not connect this battery directly to the alternator, and do not attempt to use it as a starter battery. It is an auxiliary lithium and requires a DC-DC charger.

Q: What does 330A continuous discharge actually mean?
How much current the battery can deliver constantly, all day, without the BMS shutting off. Real-world: a 3000W inverter draws roughly 250A at 12V, which sits comfortably under the 330A limit. Peak (1060A) is the higher current the battery can deliver in short bursts — starting a compressor, an induction cooktop's initial pull.

Q: What's LiFePO4 and why does it matter?
Lithium iron phosphate — the safest common lithium chemistry, no thermal runaway risk. Compared with a lead-acid battery of the same rated Ah: about half the weight, usable to 100% depth of discharge (lead-acid you only get 50%), and 3000+ charge cycles instead of 500.

Q: What does the BMS do?
Battery Management System. Cell-level protection against over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and short circuits. The Heltech BMS in this battery also runs an active balancer, keeping every cell at the same voltage during charge, discharge and rest — not just at the top of a charge cycle. Longer service life, better usable capacity.

Q: What's a DC-DC charger and why do I need one for lithium?
Modern vehicles have variable-voltage smart alternators — they drop below 13V under some conditions, which won't fully charge a lithium battery, and jump above 15V under others, which damages one. A DC-DC charger sits between the alternator and this battery, presenting a stable lithium charge profile (14.2–14.6V bulk, 13.6V float) regardless of what the alternator is doing.

Q: Can it stay behind the seat / in the drawer without airflow?
Yes. LiFePO4 doesn't outgas like AGM or flooded lead-acid, so a sealed cabin or drawer is fine as long as it stays inside the 0°C – 60°C operating range. Do not install in the engine bay — sustained heat above 60°C will trigger the BMS to disconnect.

Q: How is 230Ah usable capacity different from a lead-acid 230Ah?
All 230Ah are usable on lithium. A lead-acid 230Ah gives you about 115Ah before it starts hurting its cycle life. So this battery delivers twice the usable runtime of a lead-acid at the same rated Ah, in a smaller footprint.

Q: Can I parallel two of these for more capacity?
Our workshop wires paralleled Custom Lithium batteries daily for larger caravan and off-grid builds. Come in or call us for the wiring rules on paralleling — cable size, fusing and timing matter.

Q: How long does it take to charge from flat?
From a 50A DC-DC charger, roughly 4–5 hours of driving from 20% to 100%. From a lithium-profile 240A source (peak charge limit), under 90 minutes.
