A 12V 85Ah starter battery that sits in the standard DIN85L case, with 780 cold-cranking amps and 158 minutes of reserve. Suits European diesels and larger imports that run the DIN85L tray, including Audi A4 and A6 TDI, VW Passat and Golf TDI, BMW 3 Series diesel, Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel, Range Rover Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe diesel, Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 diesel, and larger Volvo sedans. For the taller DIN85LH case (190mm high, 88Ah, 760 CCA), see []

  • 780 CCA — cold-start grunt for larger diesels and petrols in Perth summers and winter mornings
  • 158 min reserve — carries ignition, infotainment and short-run accessories through a stall or crank-fail
  • 85Ah capacity — matches factory DIN85L spec on European and Japanese diesel SUVs
  • Calcium plates — low self-discharge and better corrosion resistance than standard lead-antimony
  • Maintenance-free — sealed lid, no top-up, no acid handling across the warranty period
  • STD tapered posts — factory clamp cable terminals fit without adapters
  • Vibration-resistant — plate welds reinforced for corrugation and chassis flex on and off-road
  • Central vent and flame arrestor — safe gas release under cabinet mounting positions

Disconnect the vehicle before swapping. On modern cars with memory presets save the ECU memory with a 9V memory-saver before pulling the terminals so radio codes, electric-window and sunroof positions are not lost.

Lift the old battery, drop the DIN85L into the factory tray, and secure with the OE top-clamp or J-hook hold-down. Keep the vent tube connected where fitted. Clean the posts and clamps, grease lightly, and torque the terminals to 10-12Nm. Connect positive first, then negative.

On Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover from around 2008 onward, run a BMS reset with a dealer-grade scan tool so the vehicle learns the new battery and sets the right charging profile. Without the reset the alternator may under or overcharge the new battery and shorten its service life. The Elevate workshop does this in a few minutes.

Protect the main cable at its source, not at the battery. The main feed is fused at the starter or in the OE loom. For 24V series pairs, wire two DIN85L with matched cable gauge and a single fuse at the start of the run.

DIN85L is a European-standard starter battery. The sections below name common fits.
12V diesel and larger-petrol vehicles with a factory DIN85L tray — 353×175×175mm, STD tapered posts, C polarity
Audi A4 and A6 TDI, VW Passat and Golf TDI, BMW 3 Series diesel, Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel
Range Rover Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe diesel, Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 diesel, larger Volvo sedans
4WDs and utes that came factory with DIN85L (confirm the tray before buying)
Two DIN85L wired in series for 24V truck and bus auxiliary runs
Vehicles with Start-Stop requiring EFB or AGM chemistry — this is a flooded calcium battery
D polarity vehicles with positive on the left — use the matching DIN85 D-polarity SKU
Trays sized for DIN85LH (190mm tall, 88Ah) — see [[century-hi-performance-battery-din85lh-mf-760cca-165rc-88ah]]
24V as a single battery — this is a 12V unit

Q: What does DIN85L actually mean?
DIN is the European battery-dimension standard. 85 is the capacity bracket (around 85Ah) and L is the polarity code with negative on the left as you face the posts. The LH suffix on sibling SKUs means a taller case for more capacity; this is the standard-height version.

Q: What does MF mean?
Maintenance-free. The lid is sealed, you do not top up electrolyte, and acid-handling is not part of normal service across the warranty period.

Q: What does CCA mean?
Cold Cranking Amps. The current the battery delivers for 30 seconds at -18°C while holding at least 7.2V. 780 CCA is enough for most 2.5-4L diesel starters in Australian winter.

Q: What does Reserve Capacity mean?
Minutes the battery can hold 10.5V while delivering 25A on its own. 158 minutes is roughly two and a half hours of ignition, infotainment and lights running if the alternator fails on a highway run.

Q: What is the difference between DIN85L and DIN85LH?
Case height and capacity. DIN85L is 175mm high with 85Ah and 780 CCA; DIN85LH is 190mm high with 88Ah and 760 CCA. The tray in your vehicle only accepts one height; use the measurement already fitted.

Q: Which polarity do I need, C or D?
C polarity has the positive terminal on the right when the posts face you; D polarity has it on the left. Pull the current battery and check which side the red cable sits on. This DIN85L is C polarity; for D polarity see the sibling SKU on our DIN85 range.

Q: Will this fit my car?
Measure the current battery and check the tray. If it is 353 by 175 by 175mm, STD tapered posts, and C polarity, this fits. European diesels and larger Japanese and Korean imports commonly run DIN85L. Named fits include Audi A4 and A6 TDI, VW Passat and Golf TDI, BMW 3 Series diesel, Mercedes-Benz C-Class diesel, Range Rover Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe diesel, and Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 diesel.

Q: Can I use this with a Start-Stop system?
No. Start-Stop systems need EFB or AGM chemistry rated for the deep cycling that frequent engine stops demand. A flooded calcium battery like this one will not last in Start-Stop service. If your car has ISS Active, EFB or AGM printed on the current battery, replace with the same chemistry.

Q: Does this need a BMS reset after fitment?
On modern Audi, VW, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Range Rover from around 2008 onward, yes. A dealer-grade scan tool teaches the car's battery management system the new battery so the alternator charges it correctly. Without the reset the car may undercharge or overcharge the new battery and shorten its life. The Elevate workshop does this in a few minutes with your appointment.

Q: How long should this battery last?
Century backs the Hi Performance DIN range with a 30-month warranty. Typical AU service life for a flooded calcium DIN starter is three to five years, depending on heat exposure, how often the car is driven, and whether the alternator holds correct charge.
