A flooded calcium starter battery that puts 760 cold-cranking amps and 145 minutes of reserve into the standard DIN65 tray. Powers heavy cold-start loads on late Holden VE Commodore and Berlina V6, VW Golf Mk5/Mk6, Audi A4 B7, Mercedes C-Class W204 and BMW 3 Series E90, where the Hi Performance DIN65LH MF runs out of headroom. Mounts in C polarity with standard-post tapered terminals and the end/side hold-down ledge.

The case is 277 by 175 by 190 mm with the posts recessed inside tapered caps so overall height stays at 190 mm. 18.5 kg assembled. Platelock plate suspension, central venting with a flame arrestor on the lid, a mud rack base, and a state-of-charge indicator in the top. Carry handles mould into the end walls for lift-in on hard-to-reach trays.

The DIN65LHX is a flooded wet-cell starter battery, not AGM, EFB or a deep-cycle house battery. Running an alternator curve set for AGM or EFB over-cooks the plates. For idle-stop and stop-start vehicles use an EFB or AGM sibling; for house loads use a Century deep-cycle. Fuse the starter stud with an ANL, MIDI or MEGA at the source, not blade fuses on the main feed.

What sets it apart

Ultra Hi Performance tier, Century's flagship DIN wet-cell step above the Hi Performance range. 40 months warranty against 30 months on the DIN65LH MF below it, with 100 more cold-cranking amps and 15 more minutes of reserve for cars with heavier accessory loads or short-run cold cycles.

Australian-made by Century Yuasa in Brisbane, one of two local battery plants left in the country. Full manufacturer specification sheet available via the download link in the sidebar.

Platelock plate suspension and mud rack base. Plates clamped at both ends and lifted off the base, so vibration from corrugated roads and heavy load changes does not shed active material.

Central venting with flame arrestor. Hydrogen gas routes through a single lid vent fitted with an arrestor, so a starter-circuit arc near the battery will not ignite the headspace.

State-of-charge indicator. Green/dark/clear window on the lid gives a fast charge read without a multimeter.

Hi Performance step-down sibling. The Hi Performance DIN65LH MF is the smaller-capacity sibling at 660 CCA, 130 min reserve and 68 Ah on the same tray and polarity.

Charging, mounting and fusing

Flooded calcium charging profile is 14.4 to 14.7 V bulk and 13.5 to 13.8 V float at 20 °C, with a temperature compensation of about -18 mV per °C above 20 °C. Charge off the vehicle alternator or a wet-cell mains charger; AGM, EFB and lithium profiles will over-cook the plates over time.

Mounts in the OEM DIN65 tray with the end/side hold-down ledge. Tighten the hold-down clamp to 5 to 8 Nm. Keep terminal nuts snug but not over-torqued, as lead posts deform at high torque.

Fuse the main feed from the battery positive stud with an ANL, MIDI or MEGA fuse sized to the alternator and accessory load. Standard blade fuses cap at 30 A and are not rated for starter-circuit continuous current. On European marques from 2008 onward (BMW IBS, Mercedes SBC, VW VCDS, Volvo) a battery swap needs a BMS reset so the charging algorithm matches the new battery's age.

The DIN65LHX MF fits the standard DIN65 battery tray (277 by 175 by 190 mm overall) with the end/side hold-down format common on late-model European passenger cars. Confirm the existing battery's dimensions, polarity (C, positive terminal LEFT) and terminal type (STD standard-post tapered) match before fitting.

Tighten the hold-down clamp to 5 to 8 Nm. Fit cables onto the standard-post tapered terminals using crimped lead-plated lugs or a correctly sized clamp terminal; do not over-torque the terminal nut, as lead posts deform at high torque.

Charge off the vehicle alternator (set to a wet-cell flooded profile) or off a mains charger with a wet-cell / standard calcium profile. 14.4 to 14.7 V bulk and 13.5 to 13.8 V float at 20 °C are the right targets, with -18 mV per °C temperature compensation. AGM, EFB and lithium charging profiles will over-cook the plates over time.

On European marques from 2008 onward (BMW IBS, Mercedes SBC, VW VCDS/VCP, Volvo) run a BMS reset after fitting so the charging algorithm matches the new battery's age. Skipping the reset leaves the ECU targeting the old battery's internal resistance and shortens the new battery's service life.

Q: What does DIN65LHX MF mean?
A: DIN65 is the European battery case size code per DIN EN 50342, 277 by 175 by 190 mm. LHX marks the Ultra Hi Performance variant on the standard case. MF stands for maintenance-free, meaning the lid is sealed and electrolyte does not need topping up over the battery's life.

Q: What is the difference between the DIN65LHX MF and the DIN65LH MF?
A: Both share the DIN65 case, C polarity (positive LEFT) and STD standard-post tapered terminals. The DIN65LHX MF is the Ultra Hi Performance tier at 760 CCA, 145 min reserve, 77 Ah and 40-month warranty. The DIN65LH MF is the Hi Performance tier at 660 CCA, 130 min, 68 Ah and 30-month warranty. Step up to the LHX for heavier accessory loads, short-run cold cycles, or extra service-life headroom.

Q: What polarity is this battery?
A: C polarity, meaning the positive terminal sits on the LEFT when viewed from the front with the terminals nearest you. D polarity is the mirror. Vehicles are factory-wired with battery cables cut for one polarity only, so fitting the wrong polarity means cables will not reach, or the polarity ends up reversed. Confirm which side your existing battery has its positive terminal before ordering. For D polarity on the same tray, see the DIN65RHX MF sibling.

Q: What does CCA mean, and is 760 enough for my car?
A: CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps per SAE J537, the amperage the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at -18 °C while staying above 7.2 V. 760 CCA is at the top end of the DIN65 case size, suiting late-model European performance passenger cars with heavy cold-start loads. For most Euro 4-cylinder and smaller 6-cylinder petrol vehicles the Hi Performance DIN65LH MF at 660 CCA is enough; step up to the LHX only when the car has heavier accessory draw or runs in colder climates.

Q: What does 145 minutes reserve capacity mean?
A: Reserve capacity is how long the battery can supply 25 A continuously at 25 °C before voltage drops to 10.5 V. 145 minutes is high for a DIN65, useful if the alternator fails on a long drive, since you have about 2.4 hours of accessory plus ignition load on battery alone before shutdown.

Q: Can I run two of these in a 24V series pair?
A: Yes, two DIN65LHX MF batteries can be wired in series for 24V applications, but only if both batteries are the same age (within a few weeks of manufacture) and at the same state of charge when paired. Mismatched age or SOC lets the weaker battery drag the stronger one down and shortens service life on both.

Q: Will this work in my stop-start vehicle?
A: No. Idle Stop-Start (ISS) systems cycle the starter and ancillaries far more aggressively than conventional starts, which breaks down a flooded wet-cell battery's active material quickly. ISS vehicles need an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery instead. If you are not sure whether your car has ISS, check the engine bay for an AGM or EFB label on the current battery, or ask us with the make, model and year.

Q: Can I use this as a deep-cycle house battery for my fridge or inverter?
A: No. The DIN65LHX is a starter battery, built for short high-current bursts to crank the engine. Deep-cycling it (draining below 50 % repeatedly for house loads) shortens service life sharply. For fridges, inverters, auxiliary circuits or caravan house loads, use a dedicated deep-cycle battery with a DC-DC charger from the main vehicle alternator.

Q: Do I need to reset anything after fitting this battery?
A: On European marques from 2008 onward (BMW with IBS, Mercedes with SBC, VW and Audi with VCDS/VCP, Volvo) and some newer Australian builds, yes. A BMS reset tells the ECU the battery is new, so the charging algorithm targets the new battery's internal resistance rather than the old one's. Most workshops have the scan tool; ask your installer or bring the car to us.

Q: How long does this battery last and what is the warranty?
A: Century backs the DIN65LHX MF with a 40-month manufacturer warranty against defects. Real-world service life depends on usage, climate and charging; typically 4 to 6 years in Perth climate, less in tropical conditions and more in cooler southern climates. Regular deep discharges below 50 % SOC or leaving the battery undercharged for weeks shortens life.
