A solid-state ignition sensing relay that detects when the engine is running by reading the alternator, so it switches accessories on without tapping into any ignition wire. Runs daytime running lights, DC-DC chargers, light bars, beacons and small inverters off a true ignition signal, and leaves the vehicle's CAN bus and ECU alone. Fits caravans, 4WDs, utes, trucks and trailers that run 12V or 24V systems, including modern smart-alternator vehicles.

Solid-state construction with no moving parts, in the same housing footprint as a standard 5-pin mini ISO relay. Direct-drive output rated to 8A, with voltage sensing relay (VSR) mode and an optional manual override input. Mount it on an eyelet or bolt it to the body, so it can live anywhere in the vehicle, trailer or caravan without a long ignition signal cable.

8A is a direct-drive limit. For higher loads use the EasyAs output to trigger a heavier contactor or feed a DC-DC charger's ignition input. Mount it in a dry, protected location; the housing is sealed but not rated for submerged or constant spray exposure.

Pairs with

  • Alternator sensing — triggers when the engine runs, no ignition tap needed
  • Smart alternator ready — handles variable-voltage charging systems
  • Solid-state build — no moving parts, no contact wear
  • Dual voltage — one unit covers 12V and 24V vehicles
  • 8A direct drive — runs DRLs, DC-DCs and beacons directly
  • VSR mode — switch to voltage-sensing use with a wiring change
  • 3-wire install — ignition source, battery input, switched output
  • Mini ISO footprint — same size as a standard 5-pin mini relay

Q: What does an ignition sensing relay actually do?
It gives you a clean, switched 12V or 24V output that only comes on when the engine is running. The relay reads a small change in system voltage from the alternator, so it does not need a wire tapped into the ignition circuit. Use it as the ignition trigger for a DC-DC charger, DRLs, a beacon, or any accessory you want to run only with the engine on.

Q: What does alternator sensing mean?
Alternator sensing watches the system voltage for the rise that happens when the alternator starts charging. The relay closes once that rise is confirmed and opens again when the engine stops. Nothing touches the CAN bus or the ECU, which is why it works on vehicles where tapping an ignition wire voids the vehicle warranty.

Q: Will this work with a smart alternator vehicle?
Yes. The relay is built for variable-voltage charging systems and holds its switched output on as the alternator cycles. It is one of the main reasons buyers pick it over a fixed-threshold voltage sensing relay in late-model utes and 4WDs.

Q: Do I need to tap into the ignition wire?
No. That is the whole point of the design. Connect a permanent 12V or 24V battery feed, a chassis ground and the switched output, and the relay works out the ignition state from the alternator itself.

Q: Can I use it in a 24V truck?
Yes. The same unit covers both 12V and 24V systems, with no wiring change between the two.

Q: How much current can it switch?
8A direct drive. That is enough for DRLs, a Redarc BCDC ignition input, light bar relays, beacons, small inverters up to roughly 80W, and most trigger loads. For anything heavier, use the 8A output to drive a larger contactor or relay.

Q: Can I use it to switch a winch or a 2000W inverter?
No. A winch pulls 200 to 500A and a 2000W inverter pulls over 160A at 12V, both far above the 8A direct-drive limit. Use the EasyAs as the control signal for a 300A or 500A contactor and let the contactor carry the current.

Q: What is VSR mode and when would I use it?
VSR mode (voltage sensing relay) switches on when the main battery holds above a set voltage long enough to prove it is being charged, and off when it drops. It is the fallback mode for installs where alternator sensing is not needed, or where you want the relay to behave like a traditional battery-isolator trigger.

Q: Does it fit a standard relay socket?
Yes. The housing shares the 5-pin mini ISO footprint. It drops into any standard 4 or 5-pin mini relay base.

Q: Where should I mount it?
Mount it in a dry, protected location on either the vehicle or a trailer. The sealed solid-state housing handles underbonnet heat and vibration, but it is not rated for submersion or constant spray exposure. Keep it off the floor of a storage area that gets wet.

Q: Does it need a fuse?
Yes. Fuse the permanent battery feed at the battery, not at the relay, sized to protect the cable (typically a 10A inline fuse for the sense feed and whatever the switched load requires on its own feed).

Q: How does this differ from a Redarc or Enerdrive voltage sensing relay?
A traditional voltage sensing relay reads a fixed voltage threshold and is designed to connect two batteries. The EasyAs reads the alternator itself and gives a true ignition-on signal, so it is better suited to triggering accessories that must only run with the engine (DC-DC chargers, DRLs, beacons) rather than to joining two batteries together. Both have their place; the EasyAs is the lower-current, ignition-source answer.
