The Engel-Style Panel Mount Socket is a 12/24V DC receptacle for permanent installs in a 4WD, canopy, camper, boat, or truck. It takes any Engel-pattern two-pin plug, the connector used on Engel MT-series portable fridges and on most compatibility-styled DC fridge and accessory leads.

The socket carries 16A at 12V and 8A at 24V, comfortably running a portable fridge (typical 5-7A draw) or a similar continuous-load 12V accessory. Fuse the feed wire at the battery or a fuse block, not at the socket, and match the fuse to the lower of the cable rating and the appliance draw.

Install is a single 28.5mm hole through the panel, socket in from the front, fixing nut on from the back. The hinged dust cover keeps grit and splashes off the contacts when nothing is plugged in. The body is ABS plastic, so it will not corrode in a marine or dusty environment, but the assembly is splash-rated only, not submersible.

Q: What does "Engel-style" actually mean?
A: The Engel plug is a two-pin flat-blade DC connector originally used on Engel portable fridges. Any DC lead ending in that two-pin pattern is what customers call an Engel-style plug. This socket accepts that plug. It is not the same as a cigarette lighter socket and it is not the same as a coaxial DC barrel.

Q: Will it work with a genuine Engel fridge lead?
A: Yes. The 2-pin socket cavity matches the Engel-plug pattern that Engel's own DC power cords use, so an Engel MT-series lead plugs straight in. A typical Engel MT35 to MT60 draws around 5-7A at 12V while the compressor is running, well inside the 16A rating.

Q: What size hole do I need to drill?
A: A 28.5mm diameter cut-out. The front face is 50.3mm across, so the visible bezel covers a slightly ragged hole. Deburr the edge before pushing the socket through so the fixing nut sits flat.

Q: Can I run 24V through it?
A: Yes. The socket carries 8A at 24V. Match your fuse to the rating: a 15A fuse for a 12V install, a 7.5A fuse for a 24V install.

Q: Is it waterproof?
A: No. The hinged flap keeps dust and splashes off the contacts when the plug is out, but the body is not sealed. Mount it inside a cab, canopy, drawer, or console rather than on an exposed panel that sees rain or hose-down.

Q: Does it come with a fuse?
A: No. Fuse the feed wire at the battery or fuse block, not at the socket. See the fridge cable linked above for the mating lead that plugs into this socket.

Q: What thickness of panel does the fixing nut take?
A: Panels up to about 5mm thick. Most steel cab panels, aluminium drawer fronts, ply canopy walls, and plastic console blanks fall well inside that.

Q: Are the contacts polarised?
A: Yes. There are + and - terminals on the rear. Follow the tag printed on the body when you crimp on the feed wire. Reversing polarity will not damage the socket but the connected fridge or accessory will not run.

Q: Why buy this over the Merit or cigarette-lighter version?
A: The Engel plug is smaller and clamps in place better than a cigarette-lighter plug on corrugated roads. It also carries current more reliably than the sprung-tip cigarette contact. Pick this socket if the gear you plug into already has an Engel-pattern lead, or pick the Merit-style socket linked above if your gear has a Merit plug instead.
