Twin core cable in black sheath with red and black inner cores, sold per metre in 3mm, 4mm and 6mm sizes. Built for dual battery systems, caravan and camper trailer wiring, and other 12V/24V auxiliary circuits that need a positive and negative feed run together in one jacket.

Manufactured in Mittagong, NSW using oxygen-free copper conductors to AS/NZS 1125 and V90 PVC insulation to AS/NZS 3808, 90°C continuous operating temperature.

Size guide

Match the size to expected current draw and cable run length, longer runs need a bigger size to keep voltage drop in check.

Size Cross-section Strands Current rating (30°C)
3mm 1.13mm² 14/0.32mm 16A
4mm 1.84mm² 22A 22A
6mm 4.59mm² 57/0.32mm 38A

Need a heavier gauge for a DC-DC charger's main battery link or a longer run?

  • Oxygen-free copper, AS/NZS 1125 stranded conductor
  • V90 PVC insulation, AS/NZS 3808, 90°C continuous
  • Australian made, manufactured in Mittagong NSW
  • Twin core, positive and negative in one jacket
  • Sold per metre, order the exact length you need

Q: What does “twin core” actually mean?
Twin core cable has two insulated conductors, one red, one black, moulded together inside a single black outer sheath. It carries the positive and negative feed in one run, so you're not routing two separate cables side by side. It's the standard choice for dual battery systems, fridge power leads and any point-to-point 12V/24V circuit that needs both wires run together.

Q: What does the 3mm, 4mm and 6mm sizing actually refer to?
These are Tycab's nominal cable sizes, not the physical outside diameter. 3mm is a 1.13mm² conductor (14/0.32mm strands), 4mm is 1.84mm² (23/0.32mm strands), and 6mm is 4.59mm² (57/0.32mm strands). A bigger nominal size means more copper and higher current capacity.

Q: What size do I need for my application?
Match the size to both current draw and cable run length, voltage drop increases with distance. As a guide: 3mm (16A) suits low-draw circuits like interior lighting or accessory feeds; 4mm (22A) suits fridges and small DC-DC chargers; 6mm (38A) suits higher-draw circuits and dual battery links closer to the battery. For longer runs, step up a size to keep voltage drop in check.

Q: What's the current rating for each size?
At 30°C ambient: 3mm carries 16A, 4mm carries 22A, 6mm carries 38A. The current rating drops as ambient temperature rises, an engine bay run derates faster than a cabin run, and with longer cable lengths.

Q: Is this genuinely Australian-made cable?
Yes. It's manufactured in Australia by Tyree Cable (trading as Tycab), using oxygen-free copper conductors to AS/NZS 1125 and V90 PVC insulation to AS/NZS 3808.

Q: What insulation does it use, and how hot can it get?
V90 PVC insulation to AS/NZS 3808. Rated to 75°C in continuous use, or up to 105°C where the cable is protected from mechanical damage.

Q: What voltage is this cable rated for?
Up to 120V DC or 50V AC per AS/NZS 3808. That comfortably covers 12V and 24V automotive and auxiliary systems, it is not rated for 240V AC household mains wiring.

Q: Does it come with terminals or lugs?
No, this is cable only, sold per metre. Crimp terminals, lugs and any cable glands need to be bought separately and sized to match your chosen gauge and stud size.

Q: Is it RoHS compliant?
Yes, RoHS compliant, no restricted hazardous substances in the insulation or conductor.

Q: Should I use this twin core range or the heavier B&S twin core cable?
It depends on run length and current. For short, light-duty runs, interior lighting, sensor feeds, low-draw accessories, 3mm to 6mm twin core is the right choice. For a DC-DC charger's main battery-to-battery link, especially longer runs to a canopy, tray or trailer, check your charger's rated output against its cable-size chart: most 20–40A DC-DC chargers need 6 B&S or heavier over anything past a couple of metres, which is outside this twin core range, that's what the B&S twin core cable range covers.
