A die-cast metal 7-pin small round trailer socket that mounts to the tow vehicle and connects the trailer's tail, stop, turn, reverse and brake circuits in one keyed fitting. Carries 15A per pole at 12V so it suits most light-duty towing: box trailers, car carriers, boat trailers, horse floats and small caravans wired to the AS 2513 small round pattern. Backs onto screw terminals so you can wire it in with standard trailer cable and tape or solder as you prefer.

The housing is die-cast metal with a sprung weather lid that stays shut over the pins when nothing is plugged in. Inside, seven brass or nickel-plated brass contacts take screw terminals from the rear so you can land each core on its own labelled position. The small round footprint is about 50mm face diameter by 30mm deep, with mounting holes for an external bracket or a flat chassis mount.

Pin 3 is the earth on the AS 2513 small round pattern (white wire, not black or green). Wiring pin 2 (black) or pin 4 (green) as earth puts voltage onto a signal line and burns out globes or trailer-plug LEDs. Fuse each supply circuit at the vehicle end, not at the socket, and use at least 2.5mm² cable on the brake and earth cores if the trailer is running electric brakes.

  • Sprung weather lid — closes over the pins when unplugged
  • 15A per pole at 12V — covers tails, brakes, stop and turn
  • Brass screw terminals — accept standard trailer cable, no crimper needed
  • AS 2513 pattern — matches the common AU 7-pin small round plug

7-pin small round (AS 2513) tow-vehicle-side socket for most light-duty AU trailers
Fits trailers wired to the 7-pin small round AS 2513 pattern: box trailers, car carriers, boat trailers, horse floats, small caravans
Works on 12V DC systems; rated 15A per pole
Not for 7-pin large round AS 2513 plugs (different pin spacing; use the large round socket)
Not for 7-pin flat AS 4177.5 plugs (different pin pattern; use the flat 7-pin socket)
Not for ISO 1724 European 7-pin round; pin 5 is a handbrake sensor on the EU pattern, not AU, and wiring to AU convention damages EU-pattern wiring

Q: What does 7-pin small round mean?
Seven circular pins arranged in a tight 50mm face, inside a sprung metal cup. Each pin carries one trailer circuit (tails, stop, turn, reverse, brakes, earth) keyed to the AS 2513 Type 1 pin-position map so a matching plug lands on the right wire every time.

Q: What is the pin assignment on AS 2513 small round?
Pin 1 Yellow (left turn), Pin 2 Black (reverse), Pin 3 White (earth, 2.5mm² cable), Pin 4 Green (right turn), Pin 5 Blue (electric brakes), Pin 6 Red (stop), Pin 7 Brown (tail/clearance). Pin 3 is always the earth on AU patterns.

Q: What is the current rating per pin?
15A per pole at 12V DC on the AS 2513 small round pattern. That covers all standard incandescent and LED trailer lighting plus an electric brake controller feed. The earth pin takes a heavier 2.5mm² core because it carries the return current for every circuit at once.

Q: How does small round differ from large round?
Both patterns share the AS 2513 standard, but large round has wider pin spacing and takes heavier cable. Small round is the older AU standard found on light-duty box trailers and smaller caravans. Large round is more common on heavier caravans and horse floats where the loom runs thicker. The two are not physically compatible; the pin cup diameter is different. For the large round sibling, see [7-pin-large-round-metal-trailer-socket].

Q: How does small round differ from the 7-pin flat?
7-pin flat (AS 4177.5) uses a flat rectangular face with blade-style pins and is the most common trailer plug sold new in Australia today. 7-pin small round (AS 2513) uses a circular face with pin-and-sleeve contacts and is the older AU standard. Many existing trailers still run small round. If your trailer has a round plug and your tow vehicle has flat (or vice versa), an adaptor is the fix, not a rewire. For the flat sibling, see [flat-trailer-connector-socket-7pin].

Q: Is this compatible with European 7-pin round (ISO 1724)?
No. ISO 1724 uses the same round-plug physical shape but pin 5 is a handbrake-sensor line, not an electric-brake-control line. Wiring an AU-pattern socket to an EU-pattern plug puts the brake-control feed onto the sensor line and can damage trailer wiring. Keep AU patterns together, EU patterns together.

Q: What cable size should I run to the socket?
1.5mm² (15 AWG) on the signal pins — tails, stop, turn, reverse — and 2.5mm² (13 AWG) on the earth pin and the electric brake pin. Larger if the trailer runs big LED light bars or heavy electric brakes over long cable runs. Fuse each supply circuit at the vehicle fuse box, not at the socket.

Q: Does this suit trailers with electric brakes?
Yes. Pin 5 carries the electric brake control signal on AS 2513, fed from the brake controller in the tow vehicle. Run 2.5mm² cable on pin 5 to keep voltage drop low on longer trailers, and make sure the brake controller is wired through the correct relay and ignition feed per its own install instructions.

Q: How does it mount to the tow vehicle?
Through two or four fixing holes on the external flange of the socket housing, usually onto a flat chassis bracket or an angled towbar bracket. The sprung weather lid faces outward so it can close over the pin cup when nothing is plugged in. Keep the socket slightly tilted toward vertical so rain runs off rather than pooling inside.

Q: What else is needed to complete the trailer-end install?
The matching plug on the trailer side, see [trailer-connector-7-pin-small-round-plug]. Seven-core trailer cable to run between the plug and the trailer's loom. A rubber grommet or cable gland at the socket's cable entry if you want weather sealing on a chassis-mount bracket.
