A compact non-isolated DC-DC charger that steps a 12V input up to 24V at 15A continuous (360W). Runs 24V house banks, trolling motors, inverters and comms gear off a vehicle's 12V alternator or starter battery. Fits caravan builds, 4WD canopies, boat helms and off-grid trailers running mixed-voltage systems.

Fanless aluminium case rated IP43 with terminals facing downward. Bluetooth Smart built in for setup and monitoring through the VictronConnect app on phone or tablet. Three-stage adaptive charging covers bulk, absorption and float, with eight preprogrammed battery profiles for lead-acid, AGM, gel and LiFePO4 plus user-definable presets. 130mm high, 186mm wide, 80mm deep. 1.8kg.

Non-isolated means input ground and output ground share a common chassis earth, so this suits installs where both battery banks sit on the same vehicle frame. For galvanically-isolated systems (marine dual-start, telecoms, split-earth builds), use the Isolated variant. Fuse both input and output at the source on correctly-rated cable.

What sets it apart

Ingress protection: IP43 (terminals down)

Operating temperature: -20°C to +55°C

Derating: 3% per °C above 40°C

Height: 130mm

Width: 186mm

Depth: 80mm

Weight: 1.8kg

Mount vertically with terminals facing downward to maintain the IP43 rating. Allow 100mm of clear airflow above and below the unit for passive cooling; the case gets warm under continuous 15A load.

Fuse both input and output within 300mm of each battery. Use 6mm² cable minimum on both sides for runs under 2m; step up to 10mm² for longer runs or installs where voltage drop matters. Non-isolated construction means input and output negatives share a common chassis earth, so bond both battery negatives to the vehicle chassis.

Set up the charger over Bluetooth before first charge: pair in the VictronConnect app, select the battery preset (lead-acid, AGM, gel, LiFePO4) or define a custom profile, then confirm absorption and float voltages against the battery manufacturer's recommendations.

Refer to the Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Non-Isolated Manual for full wiring diagrams and torque figures.

12V to 24V DC step-up charger
12V input vehicle systems (cars, utes, 4WDs, caravans, boats)
24V house banks, trolling motors, inverters and comms loads
Same-chassis-ground installs
Not for galvanically-isolated systems — use the Isolated variant
Not for 24V input or 48V house banks

Q: What does “DC-DC charger” actually mean?

A DC-DC charger converts one DC voltage to another and manages charging on the output side. This unit takes 12V DC from a vehicle's starter battery or alternator and lifts it to 24V DC to run and charge a 24V house bank. Unlike a basic voltage converter, it uses a multi-stage charge profile matched to the battery chemistry, so the house bank reaches full charge safely without the alternator trying to do it alone.

Q: What does “non-isolated” actually mean?

Non-isolated means the input negative (12V side) and the output negative (24V side) share a common ground path through the vehicle chassis. The two batteries both bond to the chassis, so there's no galvanic separation between them. It's the right choice when both banks sit on the same vehicle frame. Pick the Isolated variant instead when you need two independently-grounded systems (marine dual-start setups, telecoms racks, split-earth builds).

Q: Is this a step-up or a step-down charger?

Step-up. It takes a 12V input and raises it to 24V on the output. If you need to go the other way (24V input to 12V output) the sibling Orion-Tr Smart 24/12 covers that direction.

Q: Which battery chemistries does it charge?

Eight preprogrammed presets cover lead-acid, AGM, gel and LiFePO4 at the common pack voltages. You can also define a custom profile in VictronConnect for anything outside the preset list.

Q: Does it work with smart alternators?

Yes. Smart alternators drop their output voltage once the start battery is topped up, which can confuse older DC-DC chargers that use voltage sensing to decide when to run. The Orion-Tr Smart ignores that behaviour and uses the engine-running signal (ignition wire) to decide when to charge, so output stays stable regardless of alternator mode.

Q: Can I set it up and monitor it remotely?

Yes, Bluetooth is built in. Pair the charger with the VictronConnect app on an iOS or Android phone or tablet, then set the battery preset, absorption voltage, float voltage and current limit from the app. Live output voltage, current and charge-stage status all read back through the app.

Q: Can I run two in parallel for more current?

Yes. Multiple Orion-Tr Smart units can run in parallel to lift the combined output current (two 15A units = 30A at 24V, three = 45A). Each unit still needs its own input and output fuse, and all paralleled units should share the same battery preset.

Q: What's the operating temperature range?

Full 15A output from -20°C to +40°C. Above 40°C the charger derates by 3% per °C and stays safe up to +55°C ambient. Mounting matters — vertical, terminals-down, with 100mm clear airflow above and below keeps the case within its best operating range.

Q: Is it reverse-polarity protected?

No — the datasheet is explicit on this. Fuse both the input and the output at the source battery (within 300mm) and double-check polarity on first connection. A fuse on the input is the cheapest insurance against a cross-wired install.

Q: What warranty does Victron give it?

5 years against manufacturing defects. Full terms live in our warranty policy.
