A 12V-to-48V isolated DC-DC charger that puts an alternator-charged 48V battery bank behind a single compact unit. Steps 12V input up to a programmable 40 to 60V output at 8A continuous, charging 48V LiFePO4 house banks, ebike packs, bow-thruster banks or 48V lift batteries while the engine runs. Fits custom caravan 48V systems, 4WD canopies with 48V tool batteries, boats with 48V bow thrusters and off-grid rigs feeding a 48V inverter.

The 1.8 kg aluminium-heatsink enclosure is 130 by 186 by 80 mm. IP43 keeps dust and spray out of the electronics; the terminal area is IP22. Galvanic isolation between input, output and case is rated to 200V DC. Screw terminals take cable up to 16mm². A two-pole screw-terminal remote on/off accepts a BMS low-voltage disconnect, an ignition feed or a dash switch. Bluetooth Smart is built in for VictronConnect setup, monitoring and firmware updates.

The charger shuts down below 7V input to protect a 12V starter battery and restarts at 7.5V. Output derates 3 percent per °C above 40°C up to +55°C. Match the output voltage to the 48V bank chemistry in VictronConnect, and fuse both the 12V input and 48V output close to each battery.

What sets it apart

12V to 48V step-up — charges a 48V bank from a 12V alternator

Galvanic isolation — 200V DC between input, output and case

Adaptive 3-stage charging — bulk, absorption and float per chemistry

Bluetooth Smart built in — VictronConnect app over phone or tablet

Adjustable 40 to 60V output — matches LiFePO4, AGM, gel, lead acid

Engine shutdown detection — only draws from a running alternator

IP43 enclosure — dust-tight electronics, splash-rated body

Parallel multiple units — add 8A per unit for higher charge rate

Terminals: 16mm² screw
IP (electronics): IP43
IP (connections): IP22
Galvanic isolation: 200V DC

Mount upright or on its side on a vertical panel with at least 100mm clearance above the heatsink for airflow. IP43 keeps dust and spray out of the electronics but the terminal area is IP22, so avoid direct rain or wash-down exposure. Keep away from the fridge compressor, exhaust and any heat source above +40°C — output derates 3% per °C above that.

Wire the 12V input through a 40A fuse within 300mm of the source battery using 6mm² cable up to 2m or 10mm² for 2 to 5m. On the 48V side the current is much lower — 2.5mm² up to 3m is plenty, with a 10A fuse close to the 48V battery. Both input and output terminals accept cable up to 16mm².

Pair over Bluetooth in VictronConnect to pick the chemistry (LiFePO4, AGM, gel, lead-acid or user-defined), set the output voltage, charge current and lockout voltage. Wire the remote on/off terminal to a BMS low-voltage disconnect, an ignition feed or a dash switch — a jumper across the two terminals keeps it on continuously.

Victron Orion-Tr Smart isolated DC-DC chargers — Datasheet (PDF)

12V input to 48V output isolated DC-DC charger
12V vehicle input (alternator, auxiliary battery, solar panel feed)
48V battery bank output (LiFePO4, AGM, gel or lead-acid, 40 to 60V adjustable)
Smart-alternator and Euro 5/6 vehicles with engine shutdown detection
Caravans, 4WDs, boats, motorhomes and off-grid rigs running a 48V bank
Not for 24V input vehicles — use the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 24/48-6A instead
Not for charging a 12V starter battery — this charger steps 12V UP to 48V, not down

Q: What does DC-DC charger actually mean?
A DC-DC charger takes voltage from one battery system and converts it to a different voltage with a controlled charge profile. This one takes 12V from your vehicle alternator (or an auxiliary 12V battery) and steps it up to a 40 to 60V output tuned to charge a 48V battery bank. Example: a boat with a 12V house system and a 48V bow-thruster bank uses this to top the 48V bank up while the engine runs.

Q: What does isolated DC-DC charger mean?
Isolated means there is no direct electrical connection between the input terminals, the output terminals and the metal case. Victron publishes 200V DC galvanic isolation on this unit. Isolation is important when the input battery and the output battery do not share a common negative (common on boats and some off-grid systems) and when earth-leakage paths need to stay separate.

Q: Why 12V to 48V — what systems is this for?
48V battery banks are common on marine bow thrusters, electric outboards, DIY lithium house banks sized for a 48V inverter, 48V ebike packs, scissor and boom lifts, and custom golf-cart conversions. If the vehicle only has a 12V alternator, this charger is how you keep that 48V bank topped up without plugging in to shore power.

Q: How many charging stages is it?
Adaptive 3-stage: bulk, absorption and float. Victron's adaptive logic shortens absorption after a shallow discharge and lengthens it after a deep one, so the bank is not overcharged on short trips.

Q: Which battery chemistries does it support?
LiFePO4, AGM, gel and lead-acid, with a user-defined profile for anything custom. Pick the chemistry in VictronConnect over Bluetooth. Typical 48V setpoints: LiFePO4 absorption around 54.0 to 55.2V, float around 54.0V; AGM absorption around 57.6V, float around 55.2V.

Q: Do I need to fuse the 12V input and 48V output?
Yes, both ends. On the 12V input, fit a 40A fuse within 300mm of the source battery and use 6mm² cable up to 2m or 10mm² for longer runs. On the 48V output, 10A is enough for the 8A charger — fit it close to the 48V battery with 2.5mm² cable up to 3m.

Q: Can I run multiple units in parallel?
Yes, Victron supports unlimited units in parallel. Two in parallel give 16A of charge; three give 24A. Each unit still needs its own 12V fuse, cables and remote on/off wiring, and all units should be programmed to the same setpoints in VictronConnect.

Q: Does it work with smart alternators and stop-start vehicles?
Yes. The engine-shutdown detection only draws load when the alternator is actually supplying power, so stop-start Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles with variable charging voltages are handled. If you want manual control over when it draws (for example wire it through an ignition relay), use the remote on/off terminals.

Q: How does the Bluetooth setup work?
Download the VictronConnect app (iOS or Android), power the charger up, pair over Bluetooth, pick the chemistry, set the output voltage and charge current limit, and save. The app also shows live state (bulk, absorption, float), input and output voltage, output current, and any protection events. This model has no VE.Direct port — Bluetooth is the only wire-free interface.

Q: What's the warranty?
5-year Victron Energy warranty against manufacturing defects. Full terms in our warranty policy.
