A 30-amp DC-DC charger that takes 12V alternator power and runs a managed, three-stage charge profile into a second 12V battery. Runs lead-acid, AGM, gel and LiFePO4 house banks off a smart or conventional alternator, with built-in Bluetooth for setup and monitoring. Fits 4WD canopies, caravan battery boxes, campervan cabinets, boat helms and off-grid trailer builds that have a 12V source and a 12V house system.

The 130 by 186 by 80mm housing weighs 1.8kg and runs fanless. Rated to IP43 with terminals facing down. Charge voltage adjusts 10 to 15V to suit any 12V chemistry, and the engine-running detection stops it drawing current when the alternator is off. The VictronConnect app pairs over Bluetooth to monitor state of charge, set profiles and update firmware from an Android or iOS phone.

The input polarity is not reverse-polarity protected, so fuse the input at the source and verify polarity before power-up. Full 30A output holds to 40°C ambient, then derates 3% per degree beyond that. Fuse both the input and output at the battery end, not at the unit.

What sets it apart

30A continuous — holds full output to 40°C ambient

Adaptive 3-stage — bulk, absorption, float with 8 preset profiles

Smart alternator — engine-running detection stops starter drain

Bluetooth built-in — pair VictronConnect to monitor and configure

Remote on/off — hardwired switch or app toggle

Lithium and lead-acid — AGM, gel, flooded or LiFePO4 selectable

Parallel ready — stack unlimited units for more current

IP43 fanless — sealed electronics, no fan to clog

Weight: 1.8kg

Cooling: Fanless

Operating temp: -20°C to +55°C

IP rating: IP43

Mount upright or on its side with the terminal strip facing down. Keep 100mm clear above and below for natural convection cooling — there is no fan, so the housing itself needs to breathe. Avoid engine-bay installs: the operating ceiling is 55°C ambient and output derates 3% per degree above 40°C.

Fuse the input lead at the source battery and the output lead at the house battery — 40A MIDI is the standard choice. Size cable at 6mm² minimum for runs under 2m; step up to 8mm² or 10mm² for longer runs. Both input and output use common-negative wiring; connect negatives through the vehicle chassis or run dedicated negative returns to each battery.

Verify polarity with a multimeter before applying power. This unit is not protected against reverse polarity — wiring the input backwards will damage it instantly, and that failure is not covered by warranty.

After first power-up, pair the VictronConnect app over Bluetooth, select the battery chemistry preset for the house bank (lead-acid, AGM, gel or LiFePO4) and update firmware if an update is offered. Set the fixed output mode if you want a non-charging DC-DC supply rather than a battery charger.

Q: What does a DC-DC charger actually do?

It takes power from one battery (usually the vehicle starter battery charged by the alternator) and runs a managed three-stage charge profile into a second battery. That delivers a full, correct charge for the house bank, which a direct alternator connection cannot do — modern smart alternators drop voltage once the starter is full, and lithium chemistries need a specific voltage profile the alternator will not provide.

Q: What does non-isolated mean, and does it matter?

Non-isolated means the input and output share a common negative. It is the right choice when both batteries live in the same vehicle and share a chassis earth, which covers nearly every 4WD, caravan and camper build. Isolated (galvanic separation between input and output) is only needed for engine-start cross-charging on boats and in some agricultural rigs where ground loops are a problem. Non-isolated is smaller, cheaper and more efficient.

Q: Does this work with a smart alternator?

Yes. The engine-running detection watches the input voltage pattern and only draws current when the alternator is running. On conventional alternators the behaviour is the same — start the engine, the charger wakes up, stops the engine, the charger goes to sleep so it does not drain the start battery.

Q: Can I charge a lithium (LiFePO4) battery with this?

Yes. Select the LiFePO4 preset in VictronConnect and the charger uses the correct voltage profile. Lead-acid, AGM and gel are also supported, each with their own preset.

Q: Is the input polarity reverse-protected?

No. The Victron datasheet is explicit: this charger is not protected against reverse polarity. Wiring the input backwards during install can destroy the unit on first power-up. Fuse the input lead at the source battery and verify polarity with a multimeter before connecting. If you want extra protection, a MIDI fuse at the source plus a visible terminal cover keeps installers honest.

Q: How does the Bluetooth work?

Free VictronConnect app for Android or iOS. Pair over Bluetooth, read charge current and state, pick a battery preset, adjust absorption and float voltages, set custom charge limits and update firmware. No internet or Victron account required.

Q: Can I run two together for more current?

Yes. Victron supports unlimited units in parallel. Two of these at 30A each gives 60A continuous into one bank. Make sure each unit has its own correctly sized input and output fuse.

Q: What size fuse and cable should I use?

For runs under 2m, 6mm² tinned copper on both input and output. A 40A MIDI fuse at the source and a 40A MIDI at the house battery is the standard install. Longer runs need bigger cable — oversize by one gauge for every extra 2m to keep voltage drop under 3%.

Q: I have a 24V system — is this the right one?

No. This is 12V input to 12V output only. For a 24V source charging a 12V house bank, use the Orion-Tr Smart 24/12. For a 12V source charging a 24V house bank, use the Orion-Tr Smart 12/24. The input voltage range on this unit is 8–17V DC — anything above 17V damages it.

Q: What warranty does this come with?

5-year Victron Energy limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
