Running a fridge, lights and a comms setup off your cranking battery is how you end up stranded at the far end of a track. This under bonnet kit gives the Colorado a proper second battery, charged intelligently while you drive, with every bracket, fuse and length of cable cut to suit the vehicle.

At the centre is the REDARC BCDC1225D, a 25A DC-DC charger that takes your alternator output and delivers a full multi-stage charge to the auxiliary battery, something a simple isolator or VSR cannot do. It accepts a 9 to 32V input and handles both standard and smart variable-voltage alternators, with charge profiles for LiFePO4 lithium, AGM, gel, calcium and standard lead acid.

An MPPT solar regulator is built into the charger, with REDARC Green Power Priority. When solar is available it draws from the panel first and eases off the alternator, saving fuel and taking load off the vehicle. Add a solar blanket later and it plugs straight in, there is no second regulator to buy.

The mounting side is what makes this a kit rather than a box of parts. The 304 stainless steel charger bracket is pre-drilled for the Colorado and positions the charger for engine bay airflow. The powder-coated tray bolts to factory mount points, with no drilling and no modifications. Six metres of 8 B&S twin core cable, midi fuses, holders, brackets, lugs, heat shrink and conduit are all in the box.

Suits the RG Colorado ute and the Colorado 7 wagon with the 2.8L turbo diesel, automatic or manual. The same kit covers both.

The battery is not included. This tray takes a shorter case than the LandCruiser and Hilux kits, so battery choice matters here. It is rated to a maximum battery of 265 x 174 x 200mm and 19.6kg.

For lead acid, the Century Overlander DIN65LHHDMF 4x4, 650CCA, 120RC, 70Ah → is Australian built and made for off-road work.

For AGM deep cycle, the SSB HVT50LD 12V 60Ah 600CCA Dry Cell AGM Deep-Cycle → measures 238 x 172 x 188mm, so it sits comfortably inside the tray, and the sealed dry cell handles engine bay heat and vibration well.

On lithium, the only lithium battery we will fit under a bonnet is the Invicta Xero, which is built to take engine bay temperatures. No other lithium belongs in an engine bay regardless of whether the case fits the tray.

The charger is solar-ready out of the box. To run a panel or blanket into it you will also need:

  • Everything needed to run a second battery in the Colorado engine bay, in one kit
  • REDARC BCDC1225D charges at up to 25A while you drive
  • Works with both standard and smart variable-voltage alternators
  • Built-in MPPT solar regulator with Green Power Priority, so solar is used first
  • Charge profiles for LiFePO4, AGM, gel, calcium and standard lead acid
  • Charger rated from -20 to 80 degrees Celsius for Australian conditions
  • 304 stainless steel charger bracket positioned for engine bay airflow
  • Powder-coated steel battery tray, direct fit to the Colorado engine bay
  • Suits both automatic and manual transmissions
  • Bolts to factory mount points, no drilling required
  • 6m of 8 B and S twin core cable, fuses, lugs, conduit and heat shrink supplied

  • Mounts to existing factory points in the engine bay, no drilling required
  • Suits both automatic and manual transmissions
  • Set the charge profile to match your battery chemistry before first use
  • To add solar you will need a solar input cable and an Anderson plug, both sold separately
  • Our Perth workshop fits these regularly and can usually complete one in a day
Holden Colorado RG 2.8L Turbo Diesel (10/2015 to 2020)
Holden Colorado 7 RG 2.8L Turbo Diesel
Automatic and manual transmission.

Q: Will this fit my Colorado?
A: Yes. It suits both the RG Colorado ute and the Colorado 7 wagon with the 2.8L turbo diesel, automatic or manual. If you are unsure about your build, send us your details and we will confirm before you order.

Q: Does it suit the Colorado 7 wagon as well as the ute?
A: Yes, the same kit suits both. The tray and charger bracket fit the same engine bay layout across the two.

Q: What battery fits the tray?
A: Up to 265mm long, 174mm wide and 200mm high, with a maximum weight of 19.6kg. See the suggested batteries in the description.

Q: Can I run a lithium battery?
A: The charger supports LiFePO4, but this tray takes a shorter battery than most lithium cases. Give us a call before ordering lithium for this vehicle and we will confirm what fits.

Q: Will it work with my smart alternator?
A: Yes. The BCDC1225D takes a 9 to 32V input and handles both standard and smart variable-voltage alternators.

Q: Can I add solar later?
A: Yes. The MPPT regulator is already built into the charger, so you only need a solar input cable and an Anderson plug whenever you are ready.
