WHY A DC-DC CHARGER

Modern smart alternators drop voltage to save fuel, which means a plain isolator can't fully charge a second battery from them. A DC-DC charger boosts and regulates the input to a proper multi-stage charge profile matched to your battery chemistry. Get it wrong and a lithium bank never sees full, or an AGM gets cooked — get it right and the bank lasts the years it's meant to.

SIZING THE CHARGER

Match the charger to the bank: 25A for a 100Ah battery, 40A for 150-200Ah, 50A for 200Ah plus. Undersize and you never catch up on a long fridge day; oversize and you hammer a small bank. Runs with solar input as well are a good idea on any touring build — the Redarc BCDC Alpha and Classic both accept a solar feed straight in.

REDARC, VICTRON, ENERDRIVE & INTERVOLT

The Redarc BCDC Classic25/40/50 is the touring workhorse — Australian-designed, dead simple, five-year warranty. The Alpha range adds green-power priority for solar-first setups. Victron's Orion-Tr Smart suits fully integrated Victron systems with full Bluetooth control, Enerdrive's DC2DC+ 40A is a caravan favourite, and Intervolt's DCC Pro is the pick when you want a proper remote display without a full RedVision setup.

IN-CABIN VS UNDER-BONNET

Under-bonnet units like the Redarc 20A live in the engine bay on short cable runs — ideal where the aux battery is up front. In-cabin units like the BCDCN1240 sit next to the auxiliary bank in the canopy, drawer or tub and take longer B&S cable from the alternator. Both work; the right one depends on where your battery lives and how far the cable has to travel.

Cable sizing between the alternator and the DC-DC is the single most common thing owners get wrong — undersize it and you strangle the charger, oversize it and you've wasted money. WHAT SIZE DC-DC CHARGER DO I NEED?

Match the charger to your battery capacity — a common rule is 10–20% of the amp-hour rating. A 100Ah battery is well suited to a 25A charger; a 200Ah lithium bank generally wants 40–50A. Alternator output and cable run also matter.

REDARC BCDC OR VICTRON ORION-TR SMART?

Redarc BCDC is a set-and-forget in-vehicle charger with solar input built in and is the standard on most Australian 4WDs. Victron Orion-Tr Smart is smaller, Bluetooth-configurable and pairs neatly with a Cerbo GX system, but usually needs a separate solar MPPT.

DO I NEED A DC-DC IF I HAVE A SMART ALTERNATOR?

Yes. Euro 5/6 vehicles and most late-model 4WDs use variable-voltage alternators that won't fully charge an auxiliary battery on their own. A DC-DC boosts and regulates the voltage so AGM or lithium hits 100%.

CAN I MOUNT THE DC-DC UNDER THE BONNET?

Only if the manufacturer rates it for engine bay heat — Redarc BCDC Alpha and Manager30 are; most Victron and Enerdrive units are not. Cabin, canopy or Egon DC-Hub mounting is the safer default.
