A 12/24V DC panel-mount cigarette socket for permanent installs in a 4WD, canopy, camper, boat or truck. Takes any standard cigarette-lighter plug, the sprung-tip 21mm plug on almost every 12V accessory lead sold in Australia. Runs a tyre inflator (typical 10 to 12A), a portable fridge lead (typical 3 to 7A) or a phone or tablet charger from the same wired-in outlet.

The socket carries 20A at 12V and 10A at 24V. The body is ABS plastic with a hinged dust flap that keeps grit and splash off the contacts when nothing is plugged in. Install is a single 28.5mm hole through the panel: socket in from the front, fixing nut on from the back, feed wire to a fused positive and negative bus behind.

Fuse the feed wire at the battery or fuse block, sized to the lower of the cable rating and the appliance draw. Keep this one on the vehicle side of the switch, on a 12V or 24V DC circuit, and mount it inside a cab, canopy, drawer or console rather than on an exposed exterior panel; the assembly is splash-rated only, not sealed against rain or wash-down.

Other panel-mount sockets in our range

  • Panel mount — sits flush in a 28.5mm hole
  • Dust cover — flap keeps grit out
  • Cigarette 21mm — fits standard accessory plugs
  • 12/24V rated — 20A at 12V, 10A at 24V
  • Fixing nut — no glue or clips required
  • ABS body — light and non-corroding

Q: What does cigarette-style actually mean?
The cigarette-lighter socket is the round 21mm bore accessory outlet on every car dashboard. It takes a sprung-tip plug that clamps against the bore walls to make contact. Any DC lead ending in that round 21mm sprung-tip plug is what most customers call a cigarette-style plug, and this socket accepts it.

Q: What does flush mount mean?
Flush mount means the socket sits level with the panel surface, with only the front bezel showing. Drill a single 28.5mm hole through the panel, push the socket in from the front, tighten the fixing nut on the back. The result looks like a factory-fitted outlet rather than a bolt-on box.

Q: What size hole do I need to drill?
A 28.5mm diameter cut-out. The front face is about 40mm across, so the visible bezel covers a slightly ragged hole. Deburr the edge before pushing the socket through so the fixing nut sits flat.

Q: Will a standard 12V phone charger, compressor or fridge lead fit?
Yes. The socket takes any standard cigarette-lighter plug, the sprung-tip 21mm plug on the end of almost every 12V accessory lead sold in Australia. Phone chargers, tyre inflators, work-lights and fridge cords all use it.

Q: Can I run 24V through it?
Yes. The socket carries 10A at 24V. Match the fuse to the rating: a 15A fuse for a 12V install (below the 20A ceiling), a 7.5A fuse for a 24V install (below the 10A ceiling).

Q: Is it waterproof?
No. The dust cover keeps grit and splashes off the contacts when the plug is out, but the body is not sealed. Mount it inside a cab, canopy, drawer or console rather than on an exposed panel that sees rain or hose-down.

Q: Does it come with a fuse?
No. Fuse the feed wire at the battery or fuse block, not at the socket. Size the fuse to the lower of the cable rating and the appliance draw.

Q: What thickness of panel does the fixing nut take?
Panels up to about 5mm thick. Most steel cab panels, aluminium drawer fronts, ply canopy walls and plastic console blanks fall well inside that.

Q: Can I mount it vertically or upside-down?
Yes. Orientation does not affect how the socket works. Vertical or overhead mounts benefit most from the dust cover, since gravity keeps grit out of the bore when nothing is plugged in.

Q: What comes in the box?
The socket body with hinged dust cover, plus a threaded fixing nut. Feed wire and inline fuse are sold separately.

Q: Why buy this over the Merit or Engel version?
Cigarette-style is the widest-fitting outlet, since almost every 12V accessory lead sold in Australia ships with a cigarette plug. Pick this if the gear plugs into a cigarette outlet. Pick the Merit-style socket in our range if the gear has a smaller Merit plug, or the Engel-style socket if it uses the Engel-pattern 2-pin plug.
