50A DC-DC + MPPT SOLAR

Alpha series — premium in-cabin dual-input charger with Bluetooth.

REDARC APP CONTROL

Monitor charging and set the battery profile over Bluetooth from the Redarc app.

6 CHARGE PROFILES

AGM, Gel, Calcium, Standard Lead Acid, Heated Lithium, Standard Lithium — every common automotive chemistry.

GREEN POWER PRIORITY

Solar takes precedence over the alternator when the panels are producing — saves fuel.

MADE IN ADELAIDE

Designed, built and tested by Redarc in Adelaide. Backed by a 2-year Redarc warranty.

A 50A DC-DC charger with dual input (alternator and MPPT solar) for building a 12V auxiliary battery bank in the vehicle. The Alpha range is Redarc's premium tier: Bluetooth control via the RedVision app, Green Power Priority™ that uses solar first to save alternator load, over-the-air firmware updates, and push-button flat-start recovery.

Designed, built and tested by Redarc in Adelaide, and backed by a 2-year Redarc warranty. IP67/IP69K sealed against dust and high-pressure water. Mounts in the engine bay, cabin, canopy or rear of the vehicle. Screw-terminal connections.

What sets it apart

  • 50A dual input — DC from the alternator and MPPT solar, running at the same time.
  • Green Power Priority — uses available solar first, drops alternator draw, saves fuel.
  • RedVision Bluetooth — monitor charging, set the battery profile and read faults from the app.
  • 6 battery profiles — AGM, Gel, Calcium, Standard Lead Acid, Heated Lithium, Standard Lithium.
  • 15-minute flat-start recovery — push-button reset to get the vehicle started from a flat auxiliary.

⚠ Smart alternators & multi-charger setups: our workshop always hardwires an ignition trigger to the charger on late-model vehicles with stop-start or variable-voltage alternators, and on any build with more than one BCDC (charger in the vehicle plus a second in the caravan). Ask us if you're unsure whether your vehicle needs this.

Output is 12V. For a 24V auxiliary system, this is the direct 24V equivalent:

Batteries and install hardware we pair with this DC-DC, sold separately.

Mounting location

  • IP67/IP69K sealed. Mounts in the engine bay, cabin, canopy or rear of the vehicle.
  • Allow airflow around the unit for cooling; don't box it in tight.
  • Vehicle-specific mounting brackets available separately.

Wiring & terminals

  • Screw terminals for start battery input, house battery output and solar input.
  • 6 B&S cable to the start battery covers most 50A installs; step up on long runs.
  • Fit an in-line fuse close to the start battery on the alternator input.
  • Our workshop wires these with our own harness; we can install with the vehicle if you're local.

Configuration

  • Set the battery profile from the RedVision app over Bluetooth.
  • On smart-alternator vehicles and multi-charger setups, hardwire the ignition trigger per the manual.
  • Firmware updates apply over the air through the app.

Full fitting steps and wiring diagrams are in the Redarc BCDC Alpha manual, downloadable from this page.

Do not

connect a 24V start battery to this 12V-output unit. Use the Redarc BCDC2420 instead.

Q: What does DC-DC actually mean and why do I need one?
Direct Current to Direct Current converter. Your vehicle's alternator puts out a variable voltage (12.6V to 15V+, depending on RPM and battery state), and smart alternators can drop below 13V for fuel-saving. A DC-DC takes that messy input and produces a stable, correct charge profile for the auxiliary battery you're charging, whether it's AGM, gel or lithium. Without one, a lithium auxiliary either won't fully charge or gets damaged; a lead-acid auxiliary won't last as long.

Q: What is MPPT and how does the solar input use it?
Maximum Power Point Tracking. A solar panel's voltage and current shift constantly with sunlight and load. An MPPT controller continuously adjusts to sit right at the sweet spot where the panel delivers the most watts, typically 20 to 30% more than a simpler PWM controller extracts from the same panel. The Alpha50's built-in MPPT means you don't need a separate solar controller; wire panels straight to the solar terminals.

Q: What does IP67 / IP69K mean?
Ingress Protection rating. First digit is dust, second is water. IP67 = dust-tight, protected against 30 minutes of immersion in 1m of water. IP69K = protected against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets (steam-cleaner spec). Practically, this unit shrugs off engine-bay dust, rain, mud, and a pressure wash without damage.

Q: Do I need a battery isolator as well?
No. The Alpha50 has an intelligent isolator built in. It disconnects the auxiliary from the start battery when the alternator stops running, so the start battery is never drained by the load on the house battery. A separate isolator is not required.

Q: What's the difference between the Alpha and the Classic?
Bluetooth control via the RedVision app, screw-terminal connections and higher build quality. Same DC-DC + MPPT solar concept.

Q: What can I do with the RedVision app?
Monitor charging state, set the battery profile, view current draw and check for faults. Free to download; no subscription required.

Q: Which battery chemistries does it support?
6 profiles: AGM, Gel, Calcium, Standard Lead Acid, Heated Lithium, Standard Lithium.

Q: Can I add solar later?
Yes. The solar input is always there. Wire panels straight to the solar terminals when you're ready. MPPT regulator is built in, so no separate solar controller is needed.

Q: Where does it mount?
Anywhere in the vehicle: engine bay, cabin, canopy or rear of the build. IP67/IP69K sealed against dust and high-pressure water.

Q: Does it work with smart alternators?
Yes. Our workshop always hardwires an ignition trigger to the charger on smart-alternator vehicles and on any build with more than one BCDC, so all chargers only run when the vehicle is running.

Q: How big a battery bank does it suit?
In our workshop's experience, 50A comfortably services a 100 to 300Ah house-battery bank. For anything larger, look at pairing two chargers or step up to the Manager range.

Q: What cable size to the start battery?
6 B&S in our workshop's experience covers most 50A installs. Step up on long cable runs.

Q: Can it recover a completely flat start battery?
Yes. Push-button 15-minute recovery mode uses the auxiliary to bring the start battery up enough to crank the engine.

Q: Do I need to remove it to update firmware?
No. Firmware updates happen over the air through the RedVision app, so the unit stays in place.

Q: Does installing it myself void the warranty?
No, DIY installation doesn't void the warranty as long as the wiring follows the manual. Redarc recommends installation by a qualified auto electrician, and our workshop does this daily if you'd rather have it done.

Q: How long is the warranty?
2 years, direct from Redarc.
