A forged-steel cable cutter that shears battery cable up to 60mm² in one squeeze without crushing the strands. Handles battery leads, DC trunk feeds, Anderson plug tails and alternator leads on 4WDs, caravans and marine builds. One-hand grip, so one hand can hold the cable while the other cuts.

Blades are forged from a single piece of steel, so there's no bolted joint to loosen under load. Handles are coated in a thick dipped-plastic grip for comfort and electrical insulation during install work. The whole tool is 293mm long overall and 0.54 kg, light enough to live in the toolbox beside the crimper and strippers.

Shear-cut blades are for copper cable only. Don't use them on wire rope, steel strand, fencing wire or ACSR; the blades chip or roll over the moment they hit hardened material. Keep them clean and oiled and the shear edges hold for years of workshop use.

Q: What does ‘60mm²’ actually mean for cable size?
A: It's the cross-sectional area of the copper strands in square millimetres. 60mm² is about 2/0 AWG, roughly the size of a thick heavy-duty battery lead or Anderson plug tail. A domestic appliance flex is 1 to 2.5mm² for scale.

Q: What is ‘shear cut’ and why does it matter?
A: The blades pass each other like scissors instead of pinching the cable flat. The result is a clean round cable end that fits straight into a lug or Anderson plug tail without needing to be re-formed. A side-cutter or bolt cutter crushes the strands first, which fouls the crimp.

Q: Will this cut 1/0 AWG battery cable?
A: Yes. 1/0 AWG is roughly 54mm², so it sits within the 60mm² rating with headroom. Anything above 2/0 AWG (67mm² and up) is over the rating and the blades won't close in one squeeze.

Q: Can it cut aluminium cable, or copper only?
A: Copper only. Aluminium is softer but the blade geometry is wrong for it; the aluminium smears and the cut end splays rather than shearing clean.

Q: Can I cut steel wire rope, winch cable or fencing wire with these?
A: No. Shear blades chip the moment they hit hardened material. Steel wire rope, fencing wire and winch cable are too hard for the shear geometry; wrecks the edge in a single cut.

Q: Can I cut live cable with these safely?
A: No. The dipped-plastic grip is for comfort, not a VDE 1000V insulation rating. Isolate the battery or circuit before cutting any DC cable, and never cut live mains, ever.

Q: When should I pick these over the ESD-safe side cutters?
A: These are for heavy stranded cable 10mm² and up, where the shear geometry matters. The ESD-safe side cutters are for small wire 0.5 to 6mm², PCB legs, cable ties and trimming insulation flash. Different tool for a different job.

Q: Can Elevate crimp heavy battery cable for me in the Perth workshop?
A: Yes. Bring the cable and the lugs or Anderson plugs and we'll make up the leads on the hydraulic crimper, including heat-shrink tails. Workshop crimps carry a visual mark so it's clear the connection was built on calibrated gear.

Q: Does the cut leave a round cable end or crush it flat?
A: Round. The hook holds the cable from one side while the blade shears from the other, so the strands keep their shape. A quick twist of the finger tidies any stray strands and the end slips straight into a lug.

Q: Does the handle open on its own after cutting?
A: No, there's no return spring on this model. Open the handles between cuts with your other hand or by resting the tip on the bench. The upside is that the handles stay where you leave them in a crowded toolbox instead of grabbing other tools.
