Load Disconnect Protection

Cuts non-essential loads before the battery is drawn down too far

A 30A battery management system that charges a 12V auxiliary bank from three sources at once: 240V mains, the vehicle alternator and solar. Rolls six jobs into one box, a DC-DC charger, a 240V AC charger, an MPPT solar regulator, a dual-battery isolator, a load-disconnect controller and a remote battery monitor. Fits caravans, camper trailers, motorhomes, canopy builds and 4WD touring rigs running a 12V house bank.

The finned alloy case measures 445 by 186 by 78mm with mounting flanges on each end for a cabin or storage-bay mount. DC and solar inputs run through a terminal-block connector on one end; 240V comes in via an IEC lead on the other. A standard battery monitor display connects over a comms cable and sits wherever it needs to be seen from.

Set the charge profile to match the battery chemistry at the display before first use. The unit handles standard lead acid, calcium, gel, AGM and LiFePO4, but it needs to be told which one. The 40A output fuse is not supplied, fit it at the auxiliary battery before closing the circuit. Keep the unit out of the engine bay, it is rated for cabin and canopy mounts only.

What sets it apart

Six-in-one — DC-DC, AC, MPPT solar, isolator, LVD and monitor in one box

30A continuous — multi-stage charging rated 30A continuous at 12V DC

Three charging inputs — 240V mains, 9-30V alternator and 9-30V solar accepted together

MPPT solar built in — no separate solar controller needed on the auxiliary circuit

5 battery profiles — lead acid, calcium, gel, AGM and LiFePO4 selectable at the display

Load disconnect — cuts non-essential loads before the auxiliary bank is drawn flat

Monitor included — standard remote battery display and comms cable in the box

Finned alloy case — passive cooling, cabin and canopy rated, mounting flanges each end

Mount the Manager30 in a cabin, cupboard or storage bay, not in the engine bay. The finned alloy case needs clear air above and around it for passive cooling, leave at least 50mm clearance on the finned faces. Use the mounting flanges on each end with M5 fasteners through to a solid panel.

Wire the DC input from the start battery through its own 50A fuse close to the start battery. Run the AC input via the supplied IEC lead to a 240V outlet. Solar connects to the dedicated 9-30V solar input, so a separate solar controller is not needed. The output runs to the auxiliary battery through a 40A fuse (not supplied, Redarc FK40 or a MIDI 40A at the auxiliary) placed within 150mm of the positive terminal.

Connect the battery sensor assembly (supplied) directly to the auxiliary battery negative. Run the comms cable from the Manager30 to the remote monitor display, which can be mounted wherever it needs to be seen from. Both ends are keyed, there is only one way to plug them in.

At first power-up, use the monitor display to set the battery chemistry profile to match the auxiliary bank. The default profile is Standard Lead Acid, LiFePO4 and AGM each need to be selected explicitly or the charge voltage will be wrong. Full install detail is in the user manual on this page. Our Perth workshop can supply, fit and commission the complete system (EC17073, Building & Energy WA).

Q: What does a battery management system actually mean?
A: In a 12V auxiliary setup it means one unit does all the charging and protection jobs that would otherwise need multiple separate boxes. The Manager30 is a DC-DC charger, a 240V AC charger, an MPPT solar regulator, a dual-battery isolator, a load-disconnect controller and a remote battery monitor rolled into a single unit. One wiring loom, one brain, one display.

Q: What does MPPT solar regulation do?
A: MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is the smart way a solar controller gets the most out of a panel. Instead of just stepping the panel voltage down to battery voltage and losing the difference, an MPPT controller keeps the panel at its ideal operating point and converts the extra voltage into extra current. In practice that is 15 to 30 per cent more charge from the same panel compared with a basic PWM controller.

Q: What does load disconnect (LVD) mean?
A: Low Voltage Disconnect cuts non-essential loads (fridge, lights, inverter) when the auxiliary battery drops to a programmed voltage. It stops a lead-acid battery being drawn flat and damaged, or a lithium battery dropping into its BMS protect state. The Manager30 has it built in with user-settable thresholds.

Q: Can it charge lithium (LiFePO4) batteries?
A: Yes. The Manager30 lists LiFePO4 as a selectable chemistry alongside standard lead acid, calcium, gel and AGM. Pick the profile at the monitor display before first use so the charge voltages match the battery, lithium wants 14.2-14.6V bulk and no float, lead acid wants a higher absorption and a float stage.

Q: What does six products in one actually mean?
A: One unit replaces a DC-DC charger, a 240V AC charger, an MPPT solar regulator, a dual-battery isolator, a load-disconnect controller and a remote battery monitor. For a typical caravan or canopy build that is five or six separate boxes with their own wiring, consolidated into one.

Q: Can I use solar and the alternator at the same time?
A: Yes. The Manager30 blends inputs intelligently, when the vehicle is running it draws from the DC input and tops up from solar; when parked it runs on solar alone. Plug 240V in on top and it switches to shore power priority. No manual switching needed.

Q: Will it work with a modern variable-voltage alternator?
A: Yes. The DC input accepts 9 to 30V, which covers variable-voltage (smart) alternator profiles used in late-model 4WDs and utes. If the vehicle has a stop-start system or a smart alternator that drops to idle voltage, the DC-DC stage still charges because the Manager30 boosts the input back up to the correct output voltage.

Q: Do I need to supply my own fuse?
A: The output needs a 40A fuse at the auxiliary battery, which is not in the box. Redarc specify their FK40 fuse kit; a MIDI 40A bolt-down fuse with a MIDI holder works equally well and is often easier to source. The input side has a built-in 50A fuse rating but should also be fused close to the start battery.

Q: Does it come with a display?
A: Yes, the standard battery monitor display and comms cable are in the box. If a touchscreen with Bluetooth and app control is wanted, that is a different part number, the Manager30 S3 with RedVision, listed separately on this site.

Q: Can I mount it in the engine bay?
A: No. Redarc rate the Manager30 for cabin and canopy mounts only. Engine-bay heat and vibration will shorten its life and void the warranty. If an engine-bay charger is needed, use the BCDC Classic40 instead.

Q: What is the warranty?
A: 2 years, backed by Redarc. Keep the proof of purchase; if a fault appears, the unit comes back to us or any Redarc dealer for warranty assessment.
